You can customize your invoice template that the recurring invoice uses to include and account summary that will show any outstanding balance and have that included as part of the balance owed on current invoice.

@MarshallA is absolutely right! Allow me to loop in for a moment and share the steps on how you can include an account summary on your invoice template.
Here's how:
1. Go to the Gear icon at the upper right, then pick Custom Form Styles under Your Company.
2. Locate the invoice template that you want to customize, then click Edit under the ACTION column.
3. Select the Content tab, then choose the middle section of the form preview.
4. Put a checkmark on Show on invoice box under Account summary, then Done.
