We use the categories to group items of the same type. You can also create sub-categories to be more specific with grouping items. While tags are customizable labels that allow you to track your money.

 

For classes, we use it to group income and expenses for things like job costing, budgeting, or fund accounting. While tags track things at the transaction level.

 

On the other hand, locations are used to track income, expenses, and assets for multiple sites or areas. While tags are more flexible wherein you can track things the way you want and it doesn't affect your books.
