Company File is opening a previous or new copy

It's hard to explain in the question subject.

When I right-click the Quickbooks icon in my dock and choose one of the Company Files, it opens up with the toolbar items back to default (I have ones removed and added, etc.) and when I close it tells me to choose a backup location.

After choosing the backup location (which shouldn't have changed) and reopening via recent items, the same thing happens.

When I open the Company File directly from the location saved on my computer, it opens up correctly with the toolbar items back how I had them. It also doesn't ask for backup location.

Anyways, it kept happening so I removed recent items and opened directly from the save location. When I close it and try to open it back up via the recent files on the dock icon, it opens back up to the toolbar being back to default & asking for a backup location.

I cant tell if I'm opening the same file or not? Is this an issue with the recent files? Are the backups overriding each other or making new files? I'm so confused.

First, you should open the qb program and it will open the last file opened.

To clean up the data files, open the most recent qb file (perhaps that is the last one opened). Minimize the opened file on your pc.

then do a search of the C drive for .qbw files.   Delete the older ones.  You cannot delete the open file.  This should help with your confusion if you have too many files for the same company.

I'm on a Mac. Also, the Company Files are all different companies. There is nothing other than backups to delete. I thought I asked this in the Mac category, I may have messed up.

Maybe find the recent versions (data files) for your companies and put them in a specific folder.  Remove the duplicates but do not clear out the trash until you are sure you have the correct files.  Then open the application for QB mac and open each file by navigating to the new file folder you put them in.  Make a specific file folder for backups.

Try just launching QuickBooks from the dock, without selecting a company file. It will open with the last one you used. Then log out of that company using the file menu. This will present the "No Company Open window".  It will show you all of the recent files.  Pick one from there.

Does that work as you expect?  Let me know either way here.
