QBO why do you not hide the inactive customers, sub-customers, vendors???

You can choose to hide, or include them by going to the Gear Icon right above the Action Column 

within the customer or vendor list.  

There, you will see a box that you can check to see or include them, or uncheck to "hide" them.

That did not work for me; "include inactive" is unchecked, and yet I still see (deleted) customers. We recently migrated from Desktop Enterprise, and 20 years' worth of inactive customer:jobs are showing. This is especially bothersome when trying to create statements, as there are almost 6,000 customers showing. Rumor has it it is because there is unbilled time / expenses. Any additional suggestions?

In QBO, you can make your customers' profiles inactive seamlessly. If the option is unavailable due to billable expenses, you can hide them.

Let me walk you through the process:

1. Sign in to your QuickBooks Online company.
2. Then, change the URL from https://app.qbo.intuit.com/app/homepage to https://app.qbo.intuit.com/app/managebillableexpense.
3. You'll be routed to the Hide unbilled expenses page.
4. Enter the correct date as the system will hide any unbilled expenses created before that date and will mark them as Closed.
5. Click Save.

In case you still can't make the customers' profiles inactive, you'll have to manually remove the Billable checkmarks to get through it. You can run the Unbilled Charges report to see all of your billable expenses easily.

Kevin, thanks for your response. I shared it with our bookkeeper, who didn't know about this. My one remaining question, does this work for both expenses (e.g. taxis) and time? If  not, ss there a separate methodology for time?

The process provided by my colleague Kevin_C includes the time that was marked as billable. If the issues persist, you can manually delete unbilled time and expenses.

You can run the Unbilled Charges report to see all the unbilled expenses. Then, you can run the Unbilled Time report to view all time transactions.

"Include Inactive" is not checked on my vendor or customer list. However, when using the search bar function at the top right of the page, it still shows all those inactive vendors/customers. (& there's no way to tell from the search bar which ones are inactive until you've clicked the name to open their customer/vendor page!... its frustrating, to say the least)

Is there a way to remove them from the main search function?
