Adding new kinds of Detail Types in your Chart of Accounts is unavailable. You can use the default ones in categorizing your accounts.
You can change the detail type of an existing account as mentioned by my colleague. However, doing so may affect your business accounting and reporting.
If you still want to update your account's detail type in your Chart of Accounts, I'd recommend consulting your accountant to keep your books accurate.
To learn more about how to use detail types for your Chart of Accounts in QuickBooks, kindly refer to this article for the detailed information: Learn about detail types in chart of accounts. It also contains an explanation of what detail types to use when adding a new account.

I'll be right here if you need more help with the accounts in QuickBooks. Thanks.
Thank you @RenjolynC for the time you took to explain this but what you described was not what I was asking... is it possible to manage or edit the Detail Types to add new kinds of Detail Types?

Thank you @Rea_M for the response. Your explanation here is what I had feared. This limitation unfortunately makes for a poor user experience for me. I hope this usability is added some day.
Thanks,
Eric
I am very disappointed to learn that it is not possible to amend the Detail Type in Quickbooks Chart of Accounts What is on the system as default is not very useful. Is there any scope for the system to be changed at any point in the near future?
What if you just want to change the Detail Type but not the account type. I want to keep the account type as an expense, but I need to change the detail, from advertising to utilities. Will this affect accounting for previous years?
Thank you for chiming in on the thread, MHuckeba. You can change the detail type, but note that changing the information might affect your accounting and reporting, as my colleague mentioned above.
However, I recommend contacting your accountant regarding what effect this will have on your books. If you don't have an accountant, we offer a Pro-Advisor service to connect you with experts within your area. Simply enter your zip code and search.
Please don't hesitate to reach out to me. I'll be here to assist. Until then, take care and be safe.
I appreciate the help. However, you just posted exactly what was posted earlier in the thread and really didn't answer my question. I will consult with an accountant. Thanks.
Dear lord are you trained to just repeat the UNACCEPTABLE answer and hope it confuses the customer??
Please let us know if QB is planning on allowing the editing of the LIMITED Detail category?
Pretty simple. Either you are, or you aren't.
Hello there, buyorsellre.
The Account Types and Detail Types lists are built-in and fixed functions within QuickBooks Online. Hence, we cannot change or edit the Detail Types list when creating new accounts (Chart of Accounts).
We can only suggest that you choose the closest detail type to the one you're looking for.
We'll take this as feedback to help us improve the program to suit your business needs. You can use these links to any changes within the QuickBooks:
Other useful links related to creating of accounts in the Chart of Accounts were already povided on the earlier responses.
Let us know if you need anything else.
I am trying to define an expense type for contract labor. As the Detail Type does not have this specific category, do I choose Legal & Professional Fees even though that is not quite accurate? The inability to add additional Detail Types under the Expense Account type is very limiting and one of the reasons I don't enjoy using QBO.
I concur with other users. The inability to add additional Types and/or Detail Types limits the usefulness of the financial reporting. Please add this capability to QB.
I appreciate your thoughts a lot about adding this capability in QuickBooks, @CB120.
I know how beneficial it is we can create and add detail types for an account. For now, I'd suggest signing in to your QuickBooks account and send us feedback about this enhancement. You can hit the Gear icon on the top right. Then select Feedback under Profile to share your insights about this functionality. By any chance, our product developers can add this in the future updates once they have examined and approved its usability.
It's our priority to boost your QuickBooks experience as well as the other users want. Also, I encourage you to check our blog site to stay tuned with the new features and product enhancements.
Please know that I'm always open if you have anything to add about QuickBooks Online. I'm here to help anytime. Stay safe and have a great weekend!
Stop posting these instructions on feedback... these issues have been around for years, so clearly QB does not care about feedback, regardless of how easy the solution would be for any competent developer.
I totally agree. "Expense" is very vague and I would like to change it to "Opertating Expense" and another to "Administration Expense" but Quickbooks isn't allowing it. That's pretty silly knowing every company is different.
Yes, please stop posting about feedback. We all know nobody in QBs is listening. It would be useful for other readers of this thread if support could admit that Account Type should be disabled as it is an unfinished thought by some previous developer and nobody in QBO support has any idea of what it is for or what it is in its present form. That way users could move on and use the limited features available in QBs that work.
QuickBooks does not provide Details in accordance and inline with IRS details. This is ridiculous. Poor business.
I agree the limitation of the account types and the inability to separate is very annoying.
Cindy
Yea I agree and I can't even get the sub-account on the report. That would probably suffice, but I can't even do that.
Yea agree and I can't even get sub-account on the report,. very annoying.
I agree that an account detail is only useful if we can customize to our business. Apparently no one at QB has ever owned a business because they are forcing us to batch almost EVERYTHING into "other business expense". The details listed are extremely basic to the point of being nearly useless for an actual business. I regret listening to the gossip and "going online" with QB. Really disappointing. I did see a video online that said an excel spreadsheet can be used to create a customized account; (including detail type) but I have not tried yet. I'm nervous to try because things might go haywire with my chart of accounts. Oh well. I'll talk to my accountant about discarding QB for 2022.
Here's a great video explaining Account Details: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuIXC3SpSBc. For business owners completely frustrated by the restrictions on changing/adding "account details", try changing the "Account Type". It could be you need to re-categorized to a different type: Assets, Liabilities, Equity, Income, Expense - then perhaps you'll see the Detail you need.
You can create your own details types.
I use Synder which had created categories for stripe fees and created a detail type of Commissions and fees.
I wanted to split one of the fees as it's a ticket source fee and not a stripe fee.
I created a new TicketSource expense type using the chart of accounts, but I couldn't find the commissions and fees detail type, I knew it was there, as I could see it when I did a search for stripe in the chart of accounts.
Then it dawned on me that Stripe had created these externally, importing the data into QBO. So I downloaded the chart of accounts excel template and created a single line entry for TicketSource Fees / Expenses / Commissions and Fees, imported it and it now shows up perfectly!
I wanted to post a Feedback to QB to no avail. WHen I hit the Gear and then Feedback, nothing happens.
can't say I'm surprised since it has only worked once since I signed up for the this program. FYI QB,
the desktop version is a 1,000 times better than this mess.
