You can use the credit card option for your invoices and allow your customers to pay them online if you have a QuickBooks Payments account connected to QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). If you don't have an account yet, I suggest signing up for QuickBooks Payments, then connect it to QuickBooks.
There are a couple of ways to connect the payments account to QBDT. Either through the Customer menu or the Receive Payments tab.
To link the account through the Customer menu:

Once completed, you're now ready to email customers' invoices and allow them to pay online.

The error message you've encountered is a sign of connectivity issues. Usually, clearing the cookies and cache in your browser (Internet Explorer) will resolve this error. There also times that you may need to change your internet settings so QuickBooks Payments can connect to our online services.

Alternatively, you can change the Compatibility View Settings in Internet Explorer to help properly display the webpages in QuickBooks Desktop:

Once it's rectified, you can now start sending online invoices.
