QBO apparently cannot generate a GL for all of 2019, I was informed it is a software shortcoming by support. I remember prior years being able to do this with no issue. This is a VERY common request from almost all of my clients accountants. Does anyone have a work around or suggestion?

Hello there, @LauraHBK.

You can pull up your general ledger in QuickBooks and change its Report period to Last year.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Reports.
  2. Type General Ledger in the search bar.
  3. Under the Report period click the drop-down arrow.
  4. Choose Last year.
  5. Hit Run report, once done.

Here's an article you can read to learn more about customizing your report: Customize reports in QuickBooks Online.

I'm also adding a video tutorial in case you wanted to save your report after customizing it: How to Save Customized Reports?

If you have further questions or clarifications about this, don't hesitate to reach back to me as I'm always happy to help.

Hi GraceC - Maybe my question was unclear, apologies. I know how to generate the report, QBO will not produce it because apparently it is too much data.  I am Pro Advisor and have already spoken to tech support and running a GL for 2019 is apparently not possible. When I attempt to run a GL for 2019 I get an error saying 'This date range is too long. Please change the dates and try again' this is why I am asking if anyone has any suggestions on a work around QBO supports answer was to run in 6 mo increments but that isn't really viable and to merge them would be a huge time suck

Hey there, LauraHBK.

Thanks for providing that additional info.

Some users have reported they've been able to avoid this error by clearing the browser cache. If the cache becomes too full of older data, it can potentially cause viewing and performance errors within the system. Clearing it forces the system to refresh and should resolve related problems. I recommend giving this a try and if you're using Chrome, here's how:

1. Click the three vertical dots in the top right corner.

2. Select More Tools, then Clear Browsing Data.

3. Change the time range to All Time.

4. Only check Cached images and files.

5. Click Clear data.

This link provides similar steps if you're using a different browser: https://community.intuit.com/articles/1771586

Let me know if this option helps and I can continue working with you here.

Morgan that didn't help either, same error message. This client does have a LOT of transactions so maybe QBO support was right and it just can't be done...

This has to be an April Fool's joke right? I just tried pulling the 2019 for my accountant and am getting the message. This is a deal-breaker, if QB Online can't handle a year's worth of data.

Please fix this ASAP

Hey there, @HPSGary1. Hope your week's been great so far.

Because QuickBooks Online is hosted on a cloud platform, we have certain restrictions in place to prevent performance issues. One of these limitations just happens to be generating and exporting reports. Since you're requesting a large amount of data, QuickBooks has to fetch it from the backend. When this happens, it starts to utilize resources, which can impact overall performance.

I know that this affects businesses like yours, so I'll submit your feedback to our Product Development team for review.

In the meantime, I recommend checking out our blog to stay up-to-date on all things QuickBooks.

Hi,

Thank you for your quick response.

Well it would be nice if someone pointed that out in the marketing materials, on the website or posted a huge red flag/banner next to the “For my accountant’s report” section.

We just upgraded to Priority Circle and I’ll be beginning the search for a new accounting app provider immediately because how can a business actually successfully do its financials without the ability to generate a basic GL or Trial Balance report for the year? What's next, you'll restricting the ability to pull a P&L for a year?

Frankly, I’ve never heard of such a failure on a basic feature. I might as well go back to pencil and paper at this rate.

Thank you!

Mike - This has not been an issue in prior years so clearly a change has been made. This report is vital is for everyone at year end. I am not sure how this is acceptable to anyone. This is a huge shortfall for QBO. You push people to migrate out of QBD, raise the pricing of QBO and then it cannot even provide the same reporting it did prior to the price increase...Nevermind the two entire days in recent history, during tax season that entire site was completely down! None of this is OK
