Re: How to delete a customer?

Hi steve.mueller195,

To delete the customer, you'll have to make the customer inactive in the Customer Information page.

Here's how:

  1. Click Sales, the click Customers at the top.
  2. Select the customer you want to delete.
  3. Click the Edit button at the top.
  4. Click the Make inactive at the bottom.
  5. Click Save.

The customer's information will not be deleted totally in QuickBooks. You can still see it in the Customer Center when you click the Include Inactive box.

You can check out this article for more information: How to add, delete, merge, and restore a customer.

Why wouldn't you be able to completely delete a customer? I don't want to make them inactive, I want to delete them.

Re: How to delete a customer?

Hi there, Quickeneer.

For now, we're not able to completely delete customers in QuickBooks Online. Once made inactive, the customer will no longer show up in your list of customers.

I will also send your feedback about being able to completely delete customer profiles. All submitted feedback will be reviewed and taken into consideration for future updates.

Re: How to delete a customer?

I've taken over QBO from a previous bookkeeper and that person inappropriately categorized several Vendors as Customers so the information is totally wrong for these few 'Customers' and instead of making them inactive because they're actually vendors, I'm guessing I'd have to re-establish them as vendors unless there's a way to re-categorize them as Vendors and take them away from  being Customers.

I am delighted to see you here, @LClukey.

Currently, the ability to convert to a vendor into a customer and vice versa is not available. You need not to worry, I can guide you on how to inactivate your vendors and then set up a new customer.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Sales menu.
  2. Choose Customers tab.
  3. Search Customer's name.
  4. Under Customer Details, click Edit.
  5. Select Make inactive.
  6. Click Save.

Here’s how to add:

  1. Go to Expenses menu.
  2. Select Vendors tab.
  3. Click New Vendors on the upper right.
  4. Enter customer information in the Vendor Information window.
  5. Click Save.

Re: How to delete a customer?

Merging is the only way, but it's a bit scary, merging a client entered by mistake with a client I've already has time entries, has been billed and has an outstanding balance.  There's no reason to NOT have a delete function, as long as it will not allow deleting any account, client or vendor with a history.  In fact, allowing two of anything, each with separate histories is a bigger mistake than deleting anything without a history!

Re: How to delete a customer?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about the features in QuickBooks Online (QBO), TheoZeck.

We value customer ideas here in the Community. In QBO, there isn't an option to completely remove the customer's information. You're right that we can only make them inactive. This lets you keep track of the deleted clients by restoring them anytime.

We're always looking for ways of enhancing QBO. I'll make sure to pass along your experience to our engineers. They'll use it to make product improvements and address issues.

Please reach out to me if you have any questions later on. I'm always happy to help. Have a good day.
