I am setting up a new non profit organization. Need to get the chart of accounts set up. Can I get a generic non profit chart of accounts to start with somehow?

The chart of accounts that is in my file now (just set it up) has "Billable Expenditure Revenue -1" as a service/fee revenue. I don't know why the accounts that are in my chart of accounts showed up. I was hoping I could select a non profit chart of accounts as a starting point that I could customize as I go along.

Welcome to the Community space, @pap-wfu.

Let's configure your company type to non-profit so you can customize it. This way, your account can use terms, reports, and forms used in nonprofit organizations. I'll guide you how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon in the upper right corner.
  2. Under Your Company select Account and settings.
  3. Click Advanced.
  4.  In the Company type click the Edit ✏️.
  5. Select the Tax form ▼ dropdown, then choose Nonprofit organization.
  6. Select Save, then Done.
  7. Sign out and sign back in to see the changes reflected throughout QuickBooks.

Once done, you can now see Invoice as Pledge and the nonprofit report will now show like Statement of Activity and Statement of Financial Position.

Aside from that, you can also edit the names on the Chart of Accounts manually based on your business needs. However, there are accounts that we cannot change since their default already. See this article for more details: Manage default and special accounts in your chart of accounts.

In case you need to track the donations to your organization and sort them in QuickBooks. You can Please refer to Steps 2 to of this resource for the details on how: How to track donations.
