Hi there, Jim3333.

There are times that the browser keeps outdated Internet files that may cause websites, like QuickBooks Online, to receive unusually invalid messages.

Let's open your QuickBooks in a private browser to see if we get the same thing. Browsing privately disables the cache from saving your browsing data, and it's a good way to check issues caused by a full cache.

Here's how on how to use private browser:

  • Google Chrome: press Ctrl + Shift + N

  • Mozilla Firefox: press Ctrl + Shift + P

  • Internet Explorer: press Ctrl + Shift + P

  • Safari: press Command + Shift + N

If the steps above works, I suggest to clear your browser's cache to boost browser-related issues. Some stored data on your browser can impact the data being transmitted, thus causing some unusual responses.

If the steps above will not work, you can use supported browsers as alternatives.

Hi @Jim3333,

You'll have to create these income accounts you mentioned in the Chart of Accounts, so they'll be included when you create a budget.

If you haven't yet, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Accounting tab.
  2. Tap the New button.
  3. Select Income as the Account Type, then fill up the remaining fields as necessary.
  4. Hit Save and Close when done.

Below is an example of the window that appears when you create a new income account.

At this point, you're ready to create a budget. Go through these steps:

  1. Click the Gear icon.
  2. Under the Tools section, select Budgeting.
  3. Tap the Add budget button.
  4. Ensure that the Pre-fill data? menu is set to No. This is so you can enter the amounts for each account by hand.
  5. Press Next, then fill out the fields as necessary. You can use the Hyphen key to enter negative amounts.
  6. Hit Save and close once you're done.

Learn how you can manage budgets by viewing this article: Create, edit, and manage budgets. This also includes the steps on how you can create and edit a budget.

You misunderstood the question, but thank you.

In other words, I'm entering my client's 2020 FY budget. My client has a deduction for an account in her income section - a negative value. QBO returned an "invalid" message when I tried to enter the negative value in our existing income account. TY!
