QBO Reports P&L by Class does not show Class hierarchy as QB Desktop did

When I added subclasses in QB Online, I was expecting the reports produced from P&L by Class to have column headers that showed the hierarchy. In QB Desktop, the reports would have multiple header rows with each of the subclass groupings. For instance, QB Desktop produced the attached report header from the following hierarchy (excerpt only):

Breakfast Meetings:

   Breakfasts:

      February

      March

And shows the column headers with subtotals:

   February (Breakfasts)

   March (Breakfasts)

   Total Breakfasts (Breakfast Meetings)

   Total Breakfast Meetings

QB Online would report these classes and subclasses with the same hierarchy with headers like this without showing the hierarchy.

Is there an option I am missing?

Is there a reason for the difference between QB Desktop and QB Online?

Cheers
Rick

QBO Reports P&L by Class does not show Class hierarchy as QB Desktop did

Hi there, sdbeach.

I'll share some information about how reports work in QuickBooks Online.

Both QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online offers all the basic reports needed to run a company. Currently, the option to show the class hierarchy is unavailable in QBO. It's only available in the desktop version. Rest assured, we're doing our best to offer better reporting and supports more complex accounting.

You'll want to export the Profit Loss by Class Report to an Excel file. This way, you'll be able to customize it according to your own preferences. I'll guide you how:

  1. Select Reports from the sidebar menu.
  2. Enter Profit Loss by Class in the search bar.
  3. Set the appropriate report date.
  4. Click the Export icon, then select Export to Excel.

I recommend checking out this article that will guide you in designing and personalizing your reports: Customizing Reports in QBO.

QBO Reports P&L by Class does not show Class hierarchy as QB Desktop did

Thanks for the quick response. Have already done the customization and exported to manipulate after the fact. Wish it were not necessary every report period! Ugh...

Please add our vote to implement this feature in QB Online, a feature that has been available and useful in QB Desktop for years.

Actually, if the  QBO implementors want to gain a step ahead, ask them to implement Excel grouping for subclasses and subaccounts. QBO provides collapse/expand toggles, which suggest the Excel grouping scope could be the same. Then apply that capability to the hierarchy of classes and we would be overjoyed!! ;-)
