Sales tax rate for services has disappeared: I cannot chose that for my invoices of March 2021. Please help!

Let's perform some troubleshooting to get your sales tax rate working in QucikBooks Online (QBO), gilles-clavel.

There are times when a browser's cache data becomes full of frequently accessed websites or damaged. This causes the sales tax rate to disappear when creating a transaction. To better isolate this issue, let's try signing in to QBO using a private or incognito window. This mode doesn't use the existing cache data and helps us confirm browser-related issues. Here's how:

  • For Google Chrome browser: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • For Mozilla Firefox browser: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • For Safari browser: Command + Option + P

If it works, go back to your regular browser and clear the cache to delete those temporarily stored files and browsing history. The overtime collection of data can create corruption, however, removing this should fix the issue. You can also use other supported, up-to-date browsers to roll out the possibility of a browser-related issue.

I've got articles here to learn more about how automated sales tax works, as well as using them in your sales transactions:

I'd like to know how you get on after performing the steps, as I want to ensure this is resolved for you. Please reply to this post and I'll get back to you. Take care always.

HI RCV
I tried what you suggested (incognito browser and clearing the cache and it didn't help).
Quickbooks really sucks. They are constantly updating the product and we have to deal with changes with no explanation.
And their online help systems sucks to: quite difficult to find the info we need
And they are also raising their fees without any explanation either.
Last year Quickbooks online fees suddenly went up from $30 to $49 per month.
And in January 2021, Intuit Payroll went from $28 up to $49! All that for one single employee with a small paycheck!
This really really sucks!

This is not the service we want you to experience, @gilles.

Let me share some information on how QuickBooks handles the calculation of sale tax.

When calculating your sales tax, QuickBooks considers the following factors:

  • Your customer's tax exempt status
  • Where you sell and where you ship
  • Your service or product's tax category

You can click on the Based on Location drop-down to select the Sales Tax rate you want to use.

If you choose the Based on Location option and wants to know the specific tax rates applied to your invoice, you can click the See the Math link.

You can read through this article for more insights about this process: Learn how QuickBooks Online calculates sales tax.

Lastly, I'd recommend visiting our QuickBooks Online blog so you'd be updated on the latest feature releases and product improvements.

Feel free to click Reply button below if you have other questions or concerns. I'm always here to help.

I have the same problem, tax disappears from items after changing the invoice date,... randomly. Issue had to escalate and waiting for this to get fixed for two days.

Also some quantities would change when you click Save in the invoice.
