Hi there. Is there a way to re-sort the Chart of Accounts by account name not number without having to do it manually? Thanks.
It's my pleasure to guide you in re-sorting the Chart of Accounts in QuickBooks Dekstop, @newyorktutor.
Let me show you how:
If you want to rearrange them, you may need to do it manually by selecting the account and dragging it to your desired place.

Conversely, I would like to sort my Chart of Accounts on QuickBooks Online by Number, but this doesn't seem to be an option on either the Chart of Accounts report or the Chart of Accounts itself.
The default lists "Income", then "Expenditures" (sic) then "Other Income" then "Other Expenditure" - this is completely unhelpful as I want to gather all income together and then all expenditure.
Please can you let me know how to sort the CoA by the account numbers I've set up?

There's an option to sort the list of accounts by number. I'll share the steps on how you can do it in QBO.
First, make sure that the Account column is showing up. Just click the small Gear icon and check the box for Number.
Second, go to the Number column and click its header. This will sort the list according to the account number that is assigned to them.
With regards to the Account List report, you can export it to Excel. Then, use Excel's sorting function to rearrange the list. Just click the Export icon and select Export to Excel.
More details about this option are discussed here: Export Your Reports to Excel from QuickBooks Online.
Let me know in your reply if you're able to sort the list of accounts by number. I'd be glad to join you here again if you need anything else.
Hi JenoP,
Many thanks for this - that fixes it for both. But it's slightly annoying to have to do it via Excel, so I'll make a feedback suggestion for this to be added to the Chart of Accounts report as a sort option.
