Hi there, @devon13. Thanks for reaching out here in the Community. I'll share some insights about your concern, along with a workaround so you can proceed to get your things done.

As I check here on my end, the feature that you're trying to access here in QuickBooks Online Essential is unavailable. QuickBooks Online (QBO) does, however, have a feature called Project. It works similarly to job costing in QuickBooks Desktop, and it assists you in organizing and tracking all moving parts.

In QBO, you can create a dummy customer to track projects. On the other hand, you can consider upgrading your subscription to QBO Plus or Advanced to utilize the Project feature.

In case you'd like to upgrade your subscription, feel free to visit this article for the steps: Upgrade your QuickBooks Online subscription.

Additionally, here are some articles that you can visit in case you'd want to create and manage classes or track your transactions by class in QuickBooks Online:

You have to pick QBP Plus or Advanced to have the Project feature. One said that if you are migrating to QBO Advanced, your Jobs data will migrate automatically. You should open the trial account to make sure. Otherwise you have to migrate the data manually or purchase a 3rd party conversion service. Keep in mind, the discounted rate is not applicable when upgrading your plan.

Thank you for the responses, but this is not what I signed up for when I explained to QB what I needed.  About all I do is track, so the jobs (or projects) are an important feature.  It migrated it from desktop to online, so I had not thought about it not working, until I tried to add something.  It makes no sense for me to increase price 9 fold from what I was paying (desktop every 3 years) to go to the next level.  It looks like back to desktop (and pay that subscription instead) unless something else can be found that can incorporate my QB file.  It has been a complete waste of time, but I appreciate the community helping more than what was done with QB originally.  Thanks again.

@devon13

You can still purchase the one time license for QB Desktop 2021 Pro/Premier if required. If you prefer to purchase the subscription license for QB Desktop 2022 (i.e Pro/Premier Plus), you can purchase it directly to Intuit, or you can purchase it from several partners at lower rates and no credit cards required (e.g $425 for Premier Plus single user). They will also announce the price increase for QB Desktop 2023 in August including the renewal price increase for QB Desktop 2022. That means you will pay the renewal price for QB Desktop 2022 higher next year.
