I was trying to view a previous reconciled transaction. I made literally no adjustments to it and even pressed revert. However, it will not close. It says "Warning this account is the wrong type for this field. Please enter a different account of the appropriate type for this field".

I am in the CC register. I tried deleting that particular transaction but then the same thing happened to the following. I can't exit QB at all.

What happens is that someone starts out with Credit Card activities but they are using the wrong Transaction Type. Look in that register, on the left. For instance, someone started out as setting up a Bank Type account, and then entered the spending as CHK and credits as DEP. Then, someone edited the Account Type to change it from Bank to CC.

Now certain transaction types are Invalid and will not open. As long as you leave them be, you are fine. What they should have done is dealt with their error more properly, such as making one Credit Card Charge or Credit entry that lists the erroneous bank-type as the Expense detail, to make Banking = 0 and Transition to the CC account using the proper entry types.

Hi there, hopezagha

It looks like it's a data damage. Let's try some steps to make sure you're able to view the transaction.

Let's start with making sure that QuickBooks is updated. Refer to this guide article on how to do that: Update QuickBooks Desktop To The Latest Release.

Once updated, verify and rebuild your data. This process helps resolve common data issues within your company file. The steps are outlined here: Verify and Rebuild Data In QuickBooks Desktop.

In case the warning still shows up, please contact our Technical Support Team. They have more tools that can double-check what's causing the issue. Here's how:

  1. Open this link: https://help.quickbooks.intuit.com/en_US/contact.
  2. Select QuickBooks Desktop, then click the version you're using.
  3. Click Solving Issues and Error Messages, then click Common Errors.
  4. Click Get Phone Number

Yes, I used a QB "Bank" account type to track my AMEX for many years.  I recently noticed that there is a "Credit Card" account type, so I switched the type so that the account shows up correctly as a liability on my balance sheet.  I am a good number of transactions in now as the "Credit Card" type and when I tried to open an older check transaction, I received this error.  The only way to get out of the loop is to select "Create a Copy", and then "Clear".  With that said, it would be exceedingly helpful for QB to have a way to convert the older check transactions to work within the "Credit Card" account type framework.  Is this possible?

In actuality, this is a software flaw.

How do I know? Well, for one, I software tested QB back in Tucson. The software should never have allowed the change from CC to a checking type account - without first dealing with these 'wrong type' transactions, either forcing the customer to fix these transactions, or optimally having the software auto-fix these during the conversion from a cc to a checking account.

Yes, you can open the transaction.

Because, guess what, now the customer is HOSED!! Once a user opens this type of transaction, this is what you cannot do:  YOU CANT EDIT THE TRANSACTION, YOU CANT CLOSE THE TRANSACTION, YOU CANNOT EASILY DELETE THE TRANSACTION, AND EVEN WORSE, YOU CAN'T CLOSE QUICKBOOOKS WITHOUT FORCE CLOSING IT!!!!!

This all makes the Intuit software folks look like a bunch of morons (I'm sure not their intention).

The only partial workaround is to delete the transaction in the register: Find the transaction in the register, right click on it, select delete. but as another person said, this simply opens (in the background) another wrong type transaction that can't be edited (really dumb). So, continue working till the end of the day, then close all windows in QB, then use Task Manager to close QB.

One rep said, submit a suggestion. Seriously? Trust me, they aleady know about it.
