Reporting an expense account as a percentage value of and income account

Is there a way to report the value of an expense category (like Cost of Goods) as a percentage of its analogous income category? Perhaps using Advanced Reporting?

I would like to do this without having to export to a spreadsheet and do the calculations manually.

I have many cost of goods accounts that I need to track changes in to see if my costs are going up or down, I do not see a way to do this in QuickBooks Premier

Re: Reporting an expense account as a percentage value of and income account

Hi there, @TaosHerb.

Thanks for taking the time to reach out to us. Allow me to help provide some option about the report you need in QuickBooks Desktop.

You can pull up the Expense by Vendor Summary report and customize it to add the percentage column. This report will help you track by vendor purchase instead by COGS account.

Here's how:

  1. At the top menu bar, click Reports.
  2. Select Company & Financial
  3. Choose Expense by Vendor Summary.
  4. Click Customize Report.
  5. On the Display window, set the date range.
  6. Put a check mark on the Previous Period to select the $ Change and % Change subcolumns.
  7. Click OK.

For additional reference, you can check this article on how to customize reports in QuickBooks Desktop

This will get you on the right track. Feel me in if you have additional questions about the Expense by Vendor Summary report. Have a good one.

Thanks, but this only shows the percentage change of how much I bought from the vendors in the 2 periods compared.
I need to know what the percentage of cost is to income for each income category.

Re: Reporting an expense account as a percentage value of and income account

Hello there, @TaosHerb

I appreciate you running the Expense by Vendor Summary report to get the information you need.

Since you want to see the percentage of cost per income category, you can use the Sales by Item Summary report. It'll show you how many item or service you've sold, the total dollar sales, the profitability of each product or service, and the percentage value of your COGS versus your income (Gross Margin).

Here's how to run the report:

  1. Go to Reports menu at the top.
  2. Select Sales, then choose Sales by Item Summary

Then, you can also use the Item Profitability report if you want to show the percentage of your expenses versus income. Here's how:

  1. Go to Reports menu at the top.
  2. Select Jobs, Time & Mileage, then choose Item Profitability
  3. Click Customize Report
  4. Go to the Display tab.
  5. On the Columns section, check the % Difference column.
  6. Click OK

The reports above will help you achieve the details you need, @TaosHerb. I'm here anytime you have other reporting concerns. Have a great day!
