Show parent account in reports

Is there a way to show the parent account in a report?  E.g., I have several investment accounts each with a sub account named "Distribution".  In any given report the transaction account will show the sub account "Distribution" but not the parent of that account.  I presume the difficulty here is that there may be subs of subs of subs ... of a parent.  It might be long but a possible resolution would be an option for a concatenated account name.  Otherwise, all of my sub accounts will need long names which include the parent (and any subs as necessary) to make the report clearer.

Hi @StPeter,

 

Currently, the accounts which will show on your reports are the one's associated with your transactions. I have a workaround that you may want to consider.

 

As a workaround, you can pull up your account list and set it side by side with your transaction report. This way, you can see the parent account of the sub-account shown on your report.

 

Here's how you can open your account list:

  1. Click on Lists from the menu bar.
  2. Select Chart of Accounts.

Since there is no way to concatenate a parent account and its sub accounts I think it's an account naming problem at this point.  My 5 investment accounts each have an account named Distribution.  Even side by side with the account list I can't tell which Distribution account is which.  I will need to put something in the account name to differentiate them.  Thank you.

I can provide you with additional details on how to view your reports that displays both the parent and the sub-accounts in your chart of account. Let’s get started.

 

To start with, may I ask what specific report are you trying to access? With QuickBooks Desktop, it has an array of reports that will allow you to customize and filter to display the specific information you need. 

 

On the other hand, when creating an account in the chart of accounts, ensure to enter a specific name for each sub-accounts.

 

By doing this, you'll be able to distinguish each sub-account from the parent account.

 

On the other hand, you can generate your Transaction Detail by Account report to view all of your transactions for each account in the Chart of Accounts.
