Hi, @marcia8110.

Let me help share some information on how you can enter the discount on QuickBooks.

You can make an adjustment to decrease or increase the amount of Sales Tax owed. Such examples are discounts, fines, interest or credits.

When entering the Adjustment for a discount, you'll need to fill in:

  • The dollar amount — either positive or negative.
  • A reason for the adjustment (optional).
  • The account used to categorize the adjustment. However, don't use the Sales Tax Payable account. The adjustment won't post correctly. Instead, use Credit or need to apply a discount: Choose an income account, such as Other Income.

QB won't let you put in a negative figure for the discount.  -0.34       when I say Credit do I put the amount in as a positive figure and will QB deduct it correctly from the amount due?

Thanks for joining the thread, @dine726.

I have some information on how to enter the credits correctly. If you see the prompt "The value entered is not valid" when you type the negative sign, just continue typing the entire amount to go through. This way, your credits will be adjusted correctly. Let me walk you through how.

  1. Go to the Taxes menu, then select Sales Tax.
  2. From the Sales Tax Owed list, highlight the tax agency you're recording the payment for.
  3. Tick Record Tax Payment and then Pick up the Bank Account from the drop-down.
  4. Enter the tax payment amount in the Tax Payment field. Then, mark the Make Adjustment box.
  5. Type the dollar amount as negative, then click anywhere in the field. The Total Payment should post the correct adjusted amount.
  6. Hit Record Tax Payment when you're ready. See the attached images below.
