Lightning Bolt = this transaction has been Verified by the Electronic connectivity or Banking Feeds download process.

Asterisk = someone Started a reconciliation and checkmarked this transaction in that tool, but then hit Leave and did not Finish the reconciliation.

Checkmark = the transaction has been Entered, Verified, marked as Cleared and the Reconciliation was Completed.

We had two duplicate checks. 1 with a checkmark and the other nothing. When deleted the one that needed to be delated, it deleted both. Why?

You have posted the Details of that check, back to the Checking account = self-referential or Circular.

Examples:
A Check that shows you bought Office Supplies; or that Check, which accidentally shows not Office Supplies, but the Checking account that the check itself is already written against. A Self-referential check will appear as the Reduction of that checking account balance and the Increase, as if it is both a check out and a deposit in, because it has the wrong Details on it.

Edit that check and Fix it; show what you spent those funds on. The check itself is already "from" Checking. You need to provide the "why we spent this money."

"do I delete the one with the lightening bolt?"

You delete whichever one is the Wrong One. Example:

Example: You had a Bill Payment Check and then you let the banking download Add a "check" which means the expense details are in the file twice. The Bill Payment check is the "right" one and the Added = the duplicate and an error.

A Lighting bolt = verified from banking download. It can be the Wrong One is "verified" from the perspective of the Accounting, however.

So, it does matter.

The Lighting bolt is a Preliminary status to get you to an easier Reconciliation. It is Not The Important piece of information here. When you reconcile, anything that is not Lightning bolt just means Checkmark It Yourself.

You don't need Lighting Bolts. You need the Right Transactions to exist.

How do I get an asterisk to change to a checkmark in reconciliation

Hello there, @jannyell.

I'd be glad to join the thread and help you change the asterisk to check-mark.

As mentioned by our Established Community Backer, qbteachmt, the asterisk appears on the register when the reconciliation process was not yet completed. To change the asterisk mark to check-mark, you may need to resume the reconciliation process. You have to go back to the Begin Reconciliation window, re-enter the beginning balance and proceed with reconciliation as usual.

To learn more and for the detailed instructions, you may check this article: Reconcile bank and credit card accounts.

Feel free to add a post/comment below if you have any other reconciliation concerns, I'll be always here to help you. Wishing you the best!
