"What does it mean when an expense splits?"

 

In QBO, SPLIT means that there are more than one GL accounts associated with the transaction.

For example, you bought $100 worth of items from Amazon for office supplies and computer parts in one transaction and you want to split into two expense accounts, that's what expense split is all about.
