On your Chart of Accounts, a sub-account is an account that is nested under another account. For instance, you may have the account "Insurance". You may choose to have sub-accounts under it like "Health", "Automotive", "Liability" and so on.
I personally do not use sub-accounts because I do not care for the way they appear on P&Ls.
