When transferring setup data from Desktop to Online will the Chart of Accounts automatically transfer? How do I deal with inactive accounts?

I got your back @userdadcox,

When transferring data, the bank account number and notes won't convert to QuickBooks Online. QBO has an additional level of account type called Detail type and it's assigned to the accounts link undeposited funds. Also, a generic detail type will be assigned automatically, however, you can change this after you convert.

To convert, please refer to this article for the step by step instruction: Move your QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online.

I'm attaching this guide to know more about our FAQs and your first hour with QBO.

Don't hesitate to reach out to me if you still have questions or concerns with the program. I'm always here to assist you every step of the way. Take care and have a great weekend ahead.

Thank you for the information. Will the inactive accounts transfer also?  If they do should I delete them from Desktop before I make the transfer?

Hello there, @userdadcox.

Inactive parts of the Chart of Accounts will get deleted automatically once you imported them to QuickBooks Online. If they have an open balance, they become active. No worries, you can inactivate them again in QuickBooks Online.

Here's how:

  1. Hover to the Accounting menu and then select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Find the account in question that needs to be marked as inactive.
  3. From the Action column, click the triangle ▼ button.
  4. Select Make inactive and then click Yes.

To get more insights on how the lists in the chart of accounts imported, I've added these articles:

Also, you may need to create a journal entry to correct account records in QuickBooks Online. You can consult an accountant for help when you need professional advice in categorizing accounts.
