Why am I getting error "customer has an invoice already associated with this time activity" when I try to move a time activity from a customer to a project.

I already moved the invoice to the same new project in my previous step which supposedly "unlinked" the time activity from the invoice, I even got a warning stating as much, so why am I getting an error that they are still associated and how can I get past this error?

Hi there, Eclipse.

Good to see you here in the QuickBooks Community. I'm here to help isolate the error you're getting with the time activity in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

The error occurs once the time activity is added to an invoice. You'll need to delete it so you'll be able to change the time activity from customer to project.

You can check this article on how to void or delete an invoice or other transactions

Once done, you can now change the time activity from customer to project.

For additional reference, you may visit this article to learn more about time activity timesheet

Please know that I'm just a post away if you have any other questions about the time activity. Wishing you and your business continued success.

I understand deleting the invoice is an option but I just want to make sure that is absolutely necessary before I go down that path.  As i mentioned the invoice was actually already sent to customer and paid etc.  I'm now trying to add it into a project "after the fact".  I was able to add the invoice to the project by going through similar steps to what you are showing here by changing the customer to the new project I created. On doing that,  the time activity was unlinked from the invoice. What I'm trying to understand is why I'm getting an error message that the time activity is linked to the invoice when it has already been unlinked. That is not making sense to me. Also the time activity is in a closed state and I suspect that is part of the problem, is there any way to roll it back from a closed state since it has already been unlinked from the invoice that was used to close it (without deleting the invoice itself)?  With the time activity already unlinked from the invoice , why should I need to delete the invoice?

It could be the closed time activity which causes the error message, Eclipse.

The option to roll the closed time activity is unavailable. You'll want to delete the invoice to correct your record.
