Why did QB change the way 1099 accounts are mapped?

A few (maybe more) years ago, it was easy to map your GL accounts to the appropriate 1099 and 1099 box. All you had to do was review your list of GL accounts and choose which form and box it went to, then when you went to print the forms, there wasn't a lot of back and forth. Why did this change? The new way is such a PITA, especially with the separate form selection. I've had to go in and out of the 1099 process so many times that I've lost track. I've been working on doing 1099s for one company for over 4 hours. There has to be an easier way to process 1099s.
