Categorize entertainment expenses in QuickBooks Self-Employed

Learn how to handle entertainment expenses.

If you spent money entertaining business clients or associates, you should record and categorize the expenses in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

As of 2018, the IRS decided expenses for entertaining clients, prospects, or business associates are no longer tax-deductible. Even if they aren't deductible, you should always add them to QuickBooks so you get a complete view of your self-employed finances.

Here are some examples of non-deductible entertainment expenses.

  • Events like sports games, shows, plays, and concerts
  • Sports like golf, tennis, or bowling
  • Outdoor activities like hunting, fishing, rafting, or skiing
  • Year-end parties for customers or business associates
