Do I need to issue a 1099 for repairs performed on my business vehicle. The mechanic a local LLC. All payments were made using my business debit card totaling around $1200. I am finding conflicting information online.
@PagosaMoving While there are a lot of ifs, ands, and buts that can go into this kind of question, yours is simple.
Payments made with a debit card do not go on a 1099-NEC, so it won't matter anyway; the mechanic's merchant service provider will include your debit card payments to the mechanic on what's called a 1099-K at year end.
So, no; you do not need to issue a 1099-NEC to your mechanic if you paid them by debit card every time. You may still be able to claim the repair deduction depending on how you've been treating your business vehicle expenses and mileage, but that is a question for your income tax preparer.
Thank you for sharing this in the Community, Pagosa. Let’s clear up your question about the 1099 form for your vehicle repairs in QuickBooks Online Payroll.
First, I completely agree with @FishingForAnswers's insights that you’re not required to file a 1099 for payments made through credit cards, debit cards, or third-party payment systems like PayPal. These types of transactions are excluded from 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC reporting because the financial institutions involved automatically report them—so you can rest assured that the burden doesn’t fall on you.
For further detailed guidance, I recommend checking out this valuable resource: Understand which payments are excluded from a 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC. It outlines the specific scenarios that qualify for exclusions, ensuring you're fully informed.
