1099-NEC

I just noticed the 1099 has changed for the 2020 tax year. The 1099-NEC is now used to report payments to non-employee (contractors, etc.). Until last year the 1099-MISC was used for this.

My version of Quickbooks doesn't seem to know how to handle 1099-NEC. I am running Quickbooks Manufacturing version from 2014 and it has been recently upgraded.

Does anyone know whether this is a Qucikbooks issue, an update issue, or just something my version will not do? Any suggestions?

I've got an update to share regarding the availability of the 1099-NEC in Quickbooks Premier Manufacturing and Wholesale 2014 Edition, @BSlattery.

The 1099-NEC form will be available to the supported version of QuickBooks (2018-2021). To prepare and file your 1099-NEC form I suggest utilizing the standalone 1099 processor.

This is an application that allows you to process your 1099 forms. To learn more on how it works together with it's cause, please see this link: E-file 1099s on time.

Hi Ailene,

Thank you for your quick reply.

Do you anticipate an update for Quickbooks Desktop will be available prior to the 1099 filing deadline next month?

Also, I am running Quickbooks Premier Manufacturing and Wholesale 2014 Edition. Do expect support for 1099-NEC will be available for this version? I will be closing the company at the end of 2020 and am hoping not to purchase additional support only for the 1099-NEC.

I successfully filed both NEC and MISC 1099s. However, it appears that QB removed the 1099 eligible checkmark from the 1099-NEC vendors, thus making it impossible to use Direct Deposit to pay them. So in order to send via DD I have to recheck the 1099 eligible box in the vendor set up.

Why is this happening?

Help has arrived, @eveningclouds.

Let's make sure that you're QuickBooks Desktop is updated to its latest release. This is to ensure you have the latest components and fixes. Once done, make sure to use the link in the wizard to set the thresholds to the IRS defaults. Then to batch update your vendors, go to the Lists menu:

  1. Click List menu.
  2. Select Add/Edit Multiple List Entries.
  3. Choose Vendors under the List drop-down
  4. Tap Custom Column and Add the Eligible For 1099 option.
  5. Check all vendors that are eligible for 1099, then Save Changeseligible1099.JPG

For additional info, please see this article: Create and file 1099s with QuickBooks Desktop.

You may also check the Setup and manage your direct deposit for contractors page to guide you in paying your vendors.

Also, I encourage you to visit our 1099 tutorial page. This will help you earn more QuickBooks knowledge that can help you with your 1099 tasks.

If need further assistance about managing your 1099 vendors in QuickBooks, please feel free to reach to us here again. I'm determined to ensure your success. Have a great day ahead.

I understand your message. I'm familiar with mapping to 1099s etc. and in fact was able to sort the vendors to their proper 1099 NEC and 1099 MISC categories. What I'm saying is that after having done that, QB removed the 1099 eligible check box from the vendor profile in the case of vendors who were categorized as 1099-NEC eligible.

And as a result, QB would no longer allow us to pay those vendors via Direct Deposit.

So the issue has nothing to do with mapping but with QB instead REMOVING the 1099-eligible from vendors categorized in the 'file 1099' wizard as 1099-NEC vendors.

This should not happen, but it did. I have to go back to those vendors and reindicate them as 1099 vendors, meaning probably next year I'll have to go and reclassify them as 1099-NEC. This must be a software issue on your end.

Thanks. No offense, but have YOU ever tried to contact support or figure out what department is supposed to handle your problem? It is frustrating and confusing. I used to be able to call a human to get payroll support, which is an expensive service we pay extra for each year, but now it seems like you keep throwing obstacles to genuine and helpful support in the way. This is very frustrating when trying to solve unusual and complicated issues.
