Adjustments on payroll tax payments

I am very confused about recording State payroll tax payments in QBO. I file and pay state payroll taxes outside of QB. Usually, there is a small (rounding) difference between the actual tax and tax calculated by QB. When I go to Pay Payroll tax and select Record Payment, QB automatically defaults to a payment amount which is not the actual tax payment and not the tax calculated by QB, and there is no option to manually fix the adjustment amount. Where is it pulling the payment amount and how to I change the recorded payment to the amount that will actually hit the bank?

Since Community is a public space, we're unable to pull your account here. I recommend getting in touch with our Custome Support Team. They have tools to pull up your account in a secure session, fix and change the adjustment amount on your behalf.


Here's how:


  1. Click the Help icon at the top to open the Search window.
  2. From there, scroll down to choose the Contact us button.
  3. Enter the issue /topic in the field box and then tap the Let’s talk option.
  4. In the contact information window, choose how you want to reach out to our support team: Chat or Get a callback.


You can reach them within this time: Monday to Friday from 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM and Saturday 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM PST.

I have spent hours with Customer support last quarter. They did manually correct the adjustment. However, I want to understand what is driving this issue or what I am doing wrong so that I can fix or prevent it myself. it is not an isolated error, it is systematic on my account.

The system automatically calculates the taxes based on the information entered.


The tax agencies generally only care about amounts rounded to the dollar. If there's a penny difference on the tax amounts, you don't have to worry about it. You can learn more about that here: Why do I occasionally notice penny rounding differences?


What you can do moving forward though is to record the tax payments as Prior Tax History. Which can let you enter the tax amount manually. Here's an article for the detailed steps: Recording prior tax payments.
