Custom tax rates not showing up

I'm trying to setup custom tax rates to integrate with a piece of software that requires it.

I get this when I look for it in help:

2021-02-18_14-29-02 help.png

but when I go to that page, it only shows tax agencies, not tax rates:

2021-02-17_16-00-27 no tax rates.png

When I look at a colleague's QuickBooks, he has tax rates at the bottom of this screen - why don't I? Is there a setting to enable it? Or is this only available at a higher-level plan (I'm on Simple Start)?

Thanks.

It's good to see you here again, @patrickfoley.

As much as I would love to provide you information about creating custom tax rates with API, we're unable to access the software and we have limited idea about this matter.

To help you with this, let me route you to the best support available. We have a forum called Intuit Developer where you can get an answer from one of the experts handling integration like API, developments, and other related concerns.

I'd recommend posting your concern on their forum as they are the best gurus that can help you with your concern. I'd be glad to guide you how:

  1. Go to this link: https://help.developer.intuit.com/s/
  2. Select QuickBooks Online.
  3. Click Ask a Question.

Furthermore, I've added these articles to help you set up and manage sales tax in QBO:

Custom tax rates not showing up

Hello @patrickfoley,

As of the moment, there isn't an integrated way to create a custom sales tax rate once you have a plan subscription with QuickBooks Online.

You're on the right track, the ability to create a custom sales tax rate is available on the higher version of QuickBooks Online Essentials, Plus, and Advanced plans.

But if you still need to create a custom sales tax rate, you may need to change your plan subscription. If you wish to do so, here's an article you can read for the steps: How to change your plan level to get more or fewer accounting features?

Additionally, I've also included this helpful reference for a compilation of articles you can use while working with us: Sales Tax for QuickBooks Online.

If you have any other questions, please let me know in the comments below. I'll be here to lend a hand.

OK, thanks for the detail.

So the UI will change if I upgrade to Plus or above ... what about using the API? Can I create custom tax rates using the API if I'm on Simple Start or Essentials?

Thanks,

Patrick

Thanks for adding more details about your concern, patrickfoley.

Yes, the user interface will change once you upgrade the subscription to QBO Essentials, Plus, or Advanced. The Custom rates section will show on the Tax agencies page.str.png

In regard to integrating QBO with an API, I suggest reaching out to the developer. They can discuss in detail if the app will allow you to create a custom tax rate.

Let me also share these articles about the Automated Sales Tax feature. These resources will guide you on how to manage sales tax payments, add tax categories to items, etc.

Custom tax rates not showing up

Hi there,

Thanks for the additional detail.

We ARE the developer - the only reason we pay for this account is for testing our integration with a "real," paid QuickBooks account (and whadya know, we have found this difference from the developer account).

It would be great to know whether the same UI restrictions apply to the API without having to do extensive testing on our end. I know that might be a different department on your end, but if you could get that answer for us, it would be super helpful.

If we CAN create custom tax rates with the API, then we could go down the road of creating them for customers in our app - but we obviously don't want to go down that road if the API has the same restrictions as the UI.

Thanks!

Patrick
