Federal 941/944 payment due is showing for wrong week
On Monday, I processed payroll. Our federal payroll taxes for that week are always due, electronically, that Wed. On Tues, I went to pay them, but it said they weren't due until the 6th, so I was confused. Turns out I had somehow processed payroll for the following week. Luckily, we only have one employee on payroll, currently, so I just jumped on and deleted the future check, and then issued one for the current week.
Now, for the problem. It is still only giving me the option to pay the payroll tax on the cancelled check and still shows it due on the 6th. It has not given me any option to pay this week's payroll tax. When I do select the one that is listed, it gives the warning to not pay until the check is paid, further solidifying that it is for the next week.
Any one ever experience this? Not sure how I am supposed to pay the taxes, if they won't tell me how much and they don't provide the payment link. I really don't want to get a late payment penalty, when I wasn't even given the option to pay.
You can change the date for your payroll tax by changing the payment frequency for your tax payments. This will allow you to edit the date the payment is due so that you can pay this week's payroll tax. The steps below will show you how:
Navigate to the Pay Liabilities tab, select Change Payment Method.
Go to Schedule Payments, and then choose the tax liability you want to edit or schedule a payment for.
Click Edit and enter the appropriate information.
Hit Finish, then Finish Later.
Now you can pay the correct liability tax for this week instead of next week.
Feel free to comment below if you have any other questions. Take care.
If you're using QuickBooks Online Payroll, you can find the Pay Liabilities tab in your Payroll Settings. To access these settings, you can go to the Gear icon and select Payroll Settings. If you don't see this option, then I suggest requesting a callback from our Payroll Support team. They'll be able to access your account and use a screen-sharing tool to help you fix your payment frequency.
I'm only a post away if you have any other questions. Enjoy the rest of your day!
