How do. I record sales tax I pay out on items that I use for the business.

I buy paper at Staples store they charge me sales tax. Where do I record that tax so that I can deduct it from what I will owe Maryland?

QuickBooks is not designed for tracking sales tax purchases, Scott234. However, you can create a manual liability account in your chart of accounts for sales tax. Then, when you make purchases, manually enter the sales tax amount into this account. At tax time, you can create sales tax adjustments to keep your sales tax records accurate.

When you record the expense in your accounting software or ledger, categorize it under office supplies or a similar category. Ensure you separate the sales tax from the purchase price, as this will help when you're calculating the total amount of sales tax paid.

When it’s time to file your Maryland state tax return I suggest working with your accountant for other options. It’s beneficial to consult a tax professional who is familiar with Maryland tax law.

You can also run a Sales Tax Liability report to see how much sales tax you owe.
