How do I run a month to month sales/revenues comparison for 2018?

With the Profit and Loss by Month Report, getting month to month sales/revenues comparisons for an entire year has never been easier. In order to accomplish this, use the steps below:

Running the Profit and Loss by Month Report

1. From QuickBooks Online, navigate to the Reports tab and type Month in the search bar.
2. Select Profit and Loss by Month Report from the pane that appears below.
3. Under Report period, select Last Year-to-date to show only 2018 information.

Let me help you pull up sales by product report in the month on month view. You can customize the report to show the specific statement for your sales by product in a month by month. Here's how:

1. On the panel, go to the Reports tab.
2. Search Sales by Product/Service Detail in the Find report by name box.
3. Filter the date range in the Report period.
4. In the Group by field, select Month.
5. Hit Run report.

You can use these screenshots as your reference.

Once done customizing the report, you can memorize it to save the modified setting in your QuickBooks Online account.

Thanks for the reply. I am not looking for only the sales by product by month. I want to be able to have my Profit and Loss report month on month in full but for income show the split by product. Is this possible?

For now, running the Profit and Loss by Month report that shows the income split by-product isn't possible. You can run a separate report for your P&L and Transaction List with Splits. Then export both reports to excel so you can consolidate them to one report. Let me walk you through the steps.

To run the Profit and Loss by Month report:

1. Click Reports on the left menu.
2. On the search bar, type the name of the report.
3. Choose the Report period.
4. Click Run report.

To run and customize the Transaction List with Splits report:

1. Click Reports on the left menu.
2. On the search bar, type the name of the report.
3. Make sure to choose the Report period.
4. Click Customize on the upper-right corner.
5. Click the Change columns hyperlink.
6. Check the Product/Service box
7. Click Run report.

Once done, export both report by clicking the Export icon beside the printer and Gear icon.

How to I run a report that shows me income vs expenses for February for the last 5 years.

I know the report you can run to get the details you need, @SPatel12.

You'll want to pull up the Profit and Loss Comparison report, and then filter it to show the income and expenses for February in the last 5 years. I'll guide you how:

1. Go to the Reports menu.
2. Choose the said report from the Business overview section.
3. Select Custom from the Report period drop-down, then lock in February as the month and choose the desired year (say from 2016 to 2021).
4. From the Compare another period drop-down, select % of Income, and % of Expense.
   
5. Click Run report.
   

If you wish to save this report, you can memorize it anytime. This way, you can access it right away for future use.

I am trying to run the same report comparing March for 2019, 2020 and 2021.  We just updated to Pro 2021.  I cant find the Business overview section which has the "Compare another period". 

The report I would like have three columns of March's.  Is this report really available?

Thanks for reaching out to us here in the Community. I'll help shed some light on the reports available to you in QuickBooks Desktop. 

It sounds like you're looking for the Profit and Loss by Month Report. This is a great way to view and compare per period. You'll just need to customize the report the way you wanted it.

QuickBooks Desktop also give you the option to export your report if you need to do some extra work like we've been mentioning in this thread. Here's the article about that: Import and export data in QuickBooks Desktop.

I'm still confused.  I can generate a profit and loss for a year and show columns by each month. Also, I can compare them to a similar period. 

I was hoping to do a profit and loss for the month of March 2021 and show a comparative to March 2020 and comparative to March 2019.  

I currently do a March 2021 P&L comparative to March 2020, export to excel.  Then do a March 2020 P&L comparative to 2019 export to excel and then consolidate the two.

I was hoping QB would generate the report for me so I wouldn't have to export to excel.

I see how important this report is to you. However, the only way to achieve a same-month comparison of two or more years is to export the P&L by Month report to Excel, just as you do.
