How to stop sales tax category changing automatically?

I am getting frustrated with the Sales Tax Category field always changing to a suggested option every time I make an edit to an inventory item - as simple as renaming it, updating price, etc. Why can't it just keep the original category I have selected? Why does it have to always change it whenever I make even a simple change? I have to always change my category back to my default or previous option because the system always just changes it to something else.

How to stop sales tax category changing automatically?

Hey there, @kuting.

Thanks for taking the time to reach out to the QuickBooks Community. I hope you're doing well.

You can turn off the automatic sales tax feature. Please note that once this feature is disabled, the following will happen:

  • Historical sales tax data, including tax agency info and liability reports, is saved. Sales tax will still appear on past transactions for reporting accuracy.
  • Sales tax calculations will stop for any recurring invoices going forward.
  • All your tax agencies are set to inactive status in QuickBooks Online. This stops tax collection for these agencies within the software. Note: If you need to deregister with tax agencies, you must contact them directly.
  • Your sales tax liability reporting remains available. Tax agencies will still show under Other Current Liabilities on your balance sheet.
  • Any custom sales tax rates you've set up will remain active. However, you can't add custom rates to new invoices or sales receipts, as the tax fields will no longer appear.
  • You can turn sales tax back on later if needed. If you turn back on sales tax, you will need to look at the states you sell in and manually turn on the agencies you are registered with. They won't turn back on automatically.

Here's how to turn the feature off:

  1. Open the Sales Tax Settings.
  2. Click on Turn off sales tax.
  3. Tap Turn off to confirm.

How to stop sales tax category changing automatically?

Hi @kuting

I have the same problem - QBO changes the category - usually to "non-taxable"- without my knowing it, or when I make a small change to some other aspect of the product, like price or vendor name. It looks like @Tori B  didn't understand your issue (so she answered a different question). Anyone else able to help?

Thanks for joining this thread, Sam-I-Am.

I can certainly understand how an ability to prevent your sales tax category from changing could be useful and have submitted a suggestion about it as of today.

You can also submit your own feature requests while signed in.

Here's how:

  1. Use the Settings () icon
  2. Go to Feedback.
  3. Enter your product suggestions.
  4. Select Next.

Your feedback's definitely valuable to Intuit. It will be reviewed by our Product Development team and considered in future updates. You can stay up-to-date with the latest news about your product by reviewing our Product Update page.

If there's any additional questions, I'm just a post away. Have a wonderful Tuesday!
