I am unable to add a tax agency for occupancy and tbid tax in my county. We do not charge sales tax for lodging in California.

The program automatically adds sales tax which we do not charge. I am unable to modify the tax rate or to add a new one.

Hi there, @fastbreakvideo.

To get started, may I know the reason/s why you aren't able to add a tax agency in QuickBooks Online (QBO). This way, I can gather enough details and share with you the right amount of information. Usually, adding or editing sales tax rates or agencies can be done through the Sales Tax Center. I can show you how.

  1. Open your QBO account, then click on Taxes at the left pane.
  2. Select Sales Tax.
  3. Tap on the Sales tax settings link.
  4. Click on the Add agency button to add a new agency. Or, tap Edit under the Action, to modify the rates or agencies listed under the Edit settings window.
  5. From the Add agency page, select a county or city, a filing frequency, then a start date.
  6. Save the information.

Then, you can add a sales tax rate:

  1. Click on the Add rate tab.
  2. Choose either Single or Combined.
  3. Input the name, agency, and rate.

When creating taxable invoices or sales transactions, you either select the Based on location option or the customize tax rates you've added.

For additional guide while managing your sales tax rates and settings, you can open these articles:

Thank you for your assistance.  I was able to kick start things from your solutions.  However there are still a few things I am not getting.  I added my cali state sales tax even though it is not sales tax and that is not my taxing agency, but there is not an agency listed as my taxing agency (Siskiyou County tax collector). I am unable to add a custom agency.  I was unable to edit cali tax until I added Alabama (first on the list) then I could edit the tax rates for my county.

My taxes are due quarterly while I set it up as yearly to get going and now cannot find a place to edit that setting....

Thanks again.

Cheers,

Gary

Thanks for getting back to us, @fastbreakvideo.

The sales tax in QuickBooks, which includes local or town taxes, is automatically calculated based on the following information:

  • Your customer’s tax-exempt status
  • Where you sell and where you ship
  • Your service or product’s tax category

This is to ensure that you're entering the right Billing and Shipping addresses of your customers. Then, you'll want to check your sales items to see if they have the right Sales Tax Category. You will see this information when you edit your items from the Products and services list. This article will guide you to double-check your setup: Set up and use automated sales tax.

However, if you get the same result, I'd recommend getting in touch with our Customer Support Team. They can start a screen-sharing session to help you check your setup.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Help menu.
  2. Choose to Talk to a human.
  3. Click Send a message.

To ensure that you'll be assisted on time, check out our support hours.

I've also added this article about using automated sales tax on an invoice: Use automated sales tax on an invoice or sales receipt. It will automatically calculate sales tax based on where you sell, what you sell and other transaction details.

Stay in touch with us if you have other questions. We're always here to help. Take care!
