I subscribe to QuickBooks Self-Employed Tax Bundle, so how do I start doing my taxes with Turbotax without being charged more? Turbotax is saying I have to pay. Why?

I pay $35 a month for the Tax Bundle, and I understand that means I should be able to prepare my taxes using Turbotax online with no additional cost. Yet when I start Turbotax using the same login as for my QB S-E Tax Bundle, I'm asked questions about what my situation is and then it tells me that I can only choose between a couple expert-assist options that will cost more money (several hundred dollars). Why?

Hi there, Achi. You’ll need to initiate the tax filing within the QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE) portal, not by going directly to the TurboTax website. Going directly to TurboTax often defaults to paid Live or assisted products rather than the QBSE version included in your bundle.

Before sending the data to TurboTax, review your tax checklist carefully. Once done, follow the steps below to send your data to TurboTax:

  1. Select Download reports and save them to your computer.
  2. Click Send to TurboTax.
  3. Use the same email address that you use for TurboTax Self-Employed.
  4. Select Send to TurboTax.

Tonight, I was told that "this is a common problem stemming from recent TurboTax updates, and both our QuickBooks and TurboTax teams are actively working on a solution" and that the only solution is to pay TurboTax, ask QuickBooks for a refund, and then wait 3-4 weeks to see if you get your money back.

Thanks for the reply, but it looks like the steps you describe will not work. When I look at the tax section of QB, the only options available are to email or download the details. Could this be because I already had sent my data to Turbotax when I went through the process already (after first logging into Turbotax and starting a filing process)? If that's the case, can QB reset so that I can submit the data again (to go through the process you describe)?

Regardless, I want to add that what you have described is VERY confusing and misleading on the part of Turbotax. If subscribers to the QB Tax Bundle like me have a separate way to start doing taxes through Turbotax, that should be made clear. It obviously is not, and this is very upsetting. I spent hours going through the filing process only to find out, at the very end, that I was going to be charged hundreds of dollars rather than get my filing for the fees I have been paying, all because what you have described was NEVER explained or described - neither on QB or on Turbotax.

Hi Archi. I hear you. QuickBooks Self-Employed only allows sending your tax info to TurboTax once. If you've already sent your data after starting a filing process in TurboTax, the option to send again will be disabled, leaving only email or download options.

For QuickBooks Self-Employed +TurboTax Tax Bundle subscribers over 6 months, filing fees are covered, but since QuickBooks and TurboTax accounts aren't connected, you need a special one-time code to avoid double payment. This code is sent by contacting support and allows one free federal and one free state filing. This step may not be clearly communicated upfront, causing confusion.

If you haven't received or used this code, that could explain unexpected charges. Please reach out to our Live Support team to request the code, and they can guide you in submitting the data.

Feel free to visit the Community again if you have additional questions. I'm here to lend a hand.

FYI, I was told I could not get a code because they don't work anymore because this issue is so big. And that all I can do is pay $203, send my order number to QuickBooks, and hope to get a refund. This is incredibly frustrating. If anyone has success in getting a code, I would love to hear about it because otherwise, my loyalty to QuickBooks/TurboTax is over.

I just tried getting a code and was told the same as the others who have added replies, that they are on a hold because they haven't been working. It was explained that my only recourse is to file and then get back in touch with support to apply for a refund. This is just so messed up and frustrating. I'm losing my patience with the integration of QB and TT. This happened to me last year, too, and I never got a refund.

I had this same issue last year with my 2024 taxes, and had to spend 2 days between live chat, email, and phone support to get it solved. Now I'm dealing with the exact same issue all over again with my 2025 taxes. There *is no button* in Quickbooks to open an associated Turbotax account, and if I go to Turbotax directly *while logged into the same account* it requires me to pay at the end. If this can't be fixed, it's the last year I'm subscribing to this service.
