Hi there, @cake-veganbakery.
Congrats on making your first post. I'm here to help you set up a meal and rental tax on your QuickBooks Online account.
You can assign tax categories to your inventory. These categories help you calculate sales tax more precisely. This way you'll be able to charge the right sales tax for your location and item type.
I'm going to provide steps below on how to assign a tax category to a product and service:

This doesn't seem to be working for me. I don't have the option to make an item taxable. When I try to turn on sales tax it tells me NH doesn't collect it, which it partly true but I do have to pay meals and rental tax on certain items. How do I turn this option on?
Welcome to the thread, @cake-veganbakery. I'm here to lend a hand with sales tax.
To ensure that I'm on the same page, are you trying to enable sales tax on a specific item or in general? This will help to ensure that I provide the best resolution.
In the meantime, I'm including a helpful video on using sales tax in QuickBooks Online:
I'll be waiting on standby and look forward to getting it resolved. Have a good one.
Thanks for your reply, I'm trying to add it in general. Since NH doesn't collect sales tax when I go to set it up it doesn't give me an option to turn it on. I need to have the option to apply a meals and rental tax to certain items.
Hello dear, cake-veganbakery. I appreciate you for getting back here.
Yes, that's right. When setting up the automated sales tax in QuickBooks, the NH doesn't have an option where it can collect sales tax.
We can apply the meals and rental tax to a different agency. However, I would advice to reach out to your accountant for further assistance. They'll be the one who can help what agency can we use to apply the meals and rental tax in your book.
Please know that I'm right here together with my colleagues in case you have other questions about QuickBooks. Have a good one. Take care!
With Automated Sales Tax, we won't be able to create a sales tax item on our own. QuickBooks calculates the total tax rate per transaction based on the following:
Also, it is dependent on your business address. I'd recommend reviewing your business address so QuickBooks can set up the right tax agency for you: Set up where you collect sales tax in QuickBooks Online.
You might want to review the economic nexus if you're collecting sales tax in another state. Aside from that, it's also best to speak with your accountant. They can give you more information on how you can record the meals and rental taxes.
We'll be around if you need additional help with this.
