My estimated tax amounts changed right after I printed my 1040-ES. How do I know if they are accurate now?

Quickbooks showed that I owed $268 for 1st quarter estimated taxes. Right after I printed out the 1040-ES, the amounts showing what I owe changed for each quarter to figures that were completely different. It is now showing that I paid $107 for 1st quarter which is completely inaccurate. I have strong doubts about whether the amounts shown that I owe for the remaining quarters are correct. This has never happened in the past 4 years that I've been using Quickbooks. I tried to rectify the issue through a chat with tech support, but they didn't seem too knowledgeable. Does anyone know what's going on?

It's understandable to feel concerned when your estimated taxes suddenly change after years of consistent experience. Most likely, the $107 shown as paid for the first quarter was a transaction that was automatically categorized by a bank rule as a tax payment.

That said, I recommend reviewing your Transaction rules for any that may have mistakenly assigned amounts to tax categories, and manually adjusting any entries placed in the wrong category.

As QuickBooks Self-Employed tax estimates update in real time, even a single error can affect your annual projections. Correcting the original mistake will fix any discrepancies in later quarters.

In addition, compare your transactions and the Tax summary report in QuickBooks with your actual bank statements to ensure everything is recorded correctly.

Lastly, check your Tax profile to confirm your filing status and income projections are accurate and haven’t shifted.

Hi, thanks so much for your reply. I actually discovered what happened. The information that I had entered into my tax profile cleared itself out for reasons unknown. I can't recall if the information that I enter into the tax profile persists from year to year. I re-entered all of the figures into my tax profile and now all of my owed quarterly tax amounts look correct. I am not sure why the information in the tax profile disappeared. Perhaps it needs to be re-entered at the start of every new year. I'm not sure. All seems to be working now at least.
