Payer’s state was changed due to recipient moving out of state starting 2025.

We had two contractors move after the first of the year. They were never paid while they lived in the state they currently now live. Their 1099 NEC now shows the payer state for the new state instead of the one we are in that they were actually paid from. How can I get this corrected?

An incorrect address on a 1099 form does not require you to submit a corrected version, TuskersKC. Let me provide some information to address your concerns about amending 1099s.

 

The IRS does not consider address modifications as a valid reason for 1099 corrections. More details about this are discussed here: Correct or change 1099s in QuickBooks.

 

If the form was returned or was not received by the contractor, you'll want to print a copy of it. Here's an article as a guide: Print your 1099 and 1096 forms.

 

If you e-filed the form through QBO or QuickBooks Contractor Payments, your contractor will have access to it in their account.

 

You can share these steps with them:

 

  1. Sign in at https://accounts.intuit.com/app/sign-in?app_group=QBMoney&asset_alias=Intuit.payments.
  2. Go to Incoming forms.
  3. From the customer dropdown, select the customer who sent the 1099.
  4. Select View from the table or download the 1099.

I don’t think I was clear with my dilemma. The state/payer’s state, box 6 on 1099-NEC, shows the recipient’s state, DE, and not the state of our organization, MO. They moved in January 2025 to DE, so in order to be sure they received their 1099’s on time, we used their new address. Delaware wants us to fill out a state form, but they don’t need it, Missouri needs that information. See my dilemma?

However, if you don't have the option to correct it, you can use the information from QBO to fill out a pre-printed 1099 form and manually input the necessary details.

Was wondering if you found a solution to this? I'm dealing with the exact issue (different states) and not sure where to go from here. Obviously OBO support never understands the questions asked of them, it seems easier to speak to end users directly. Thanks in advance

Given that you're encountering the same issue outlined by the original poster, it's best to follow the steps previously recommended by my colleague, CamelleT.

 

If you can update the form in QBO, please correct the address first. Then, follow this guide to print your forms, so you have a copy to send to the required agency: Print your 1099 and 1096 forms.

 

If you still have the option to correct the form within QBO, please update it to the necessary address, then follow this article about printing it for you to have a copy and send it to the necessary agency:

 

However, if the option to correct it is unavailable, you'll need to manually fill out the form outside of the program using the existing details from QBO as a reference, and ensure to update the address to the correct one.

@JanbonN  Guys.

 

Nobody is talking about the contractor's address.

 

Box 6 has to do with which state return the income flows through to; it has basically nothing to do with the contractor's address, but it can become relevant when someone has income in more than one state.
