A duplicate "sales tax payable" account was mistakenly created, and we can't inactivate it, and you limit the number of accounts we can have before charging more

A duplicate "sales tax payable" account type was created, but when we try to inactive it we receive the error "You can't change or delete this account because it's used to track sales tax amounts.".

The account register is empty, and we have tried to change the "account type" and "Detail Type," but received the same error as described above. Normally we would ignore this but we are close to reaching our chart of accounts limit, and it's not fair of Intuit to place a limit on charts and now allow us to inactivate certain account types....would not recommend quickbooks to anyone based on this until the glitch is fixed, hopefully ASAP but we know how slow QBO engineers are....

Hi @askomeed,

I understand how much time it would take to wait for a callback and getting in touch with our Customer Care Support. But I'm here to ensure that you'll be able to reach them as soon as possible.

A few reasons I can think of why you didn't receive a callback are the current number of your callback request and the volume of calls during when you called our support.

Thus said, I'd still recommend contacting them so someone can pull up your account, securely. He/she will help you delete your duplicate sales tax payable account with the help of one of there tools.

If in case you need some tips and related articles for future use, you can always visit our QuickBooks Online Help Articles page for reference.

If there's anything else that I can help you with, please let me know in the comment section down below. I'll be always around ready to help.

Could you help put me in touch with tier 2 or 3 tech support as was supposed to happen last month? I have already spoken with tier 1 several times, they never understand the problem, and I'm told I'll get a call back but haven't yet. I understand the call volume may be high as you mentioned but someone is dropping the ball on my case and my patience is wearing thin; Intuit hasn't left me any other choice but to report Intuit to state and federal regulators.  I'd appreciate it if you got your QB team leader involved to get in touch with me directly.

Thanks

Hi there, askomeed.

Thank you for posting here in the QuickBooks Community.

The error message you received appears when inactivating the default tax payable account.

You can run a report to ensure you are deleting the default account, not the manually created one.

Here's how :

1. At the left panel, select Report.
2. In the search icon, type the Account List.
3. Click the Customize button.
4. Select the drop-down list under Rows/Column.
5. Put a check-mark in the Created By box.
6. Click the Run report button.

7. Find the sales tax payable that you're trying to delete.

8. Under Created By column, you can check if it is created by System Administration or the manually created.

If the report shows System Administration, that means it's the default account. You won't be able to make any changes to it.

However, if it shows a user name, I suggest contacting our Customer Support Team. This way they can help investigate why you're unable to inactivate it.

You can check this article how to record, delete or edit a sales tax payment and to edit agencies and deactivate rates: Sales tax in QuickBooks Online.

Please know that you're always welcome to post if you have any other concerns. Wishing you and your business continued success

Re: A duplicate "sales tax payable" account was mistakenly created, and we can't inactivate it, a...

Hi ChristieAnn,

As I mentioned in my earlier posts, the "sales tax payable" account in question was created manually by one of our users; it is not one of the default accounts that came pre-loaded. In light of the limits placed on the number of allowable accounts within Chart of Accounts, we should be allowed to merge or delete manually created sales tax accounts, unless the default accounts are not counted towards our total allowable accounts. To be forced to pay extra for duplicate accounts that we cannot delete is a violation of several federal laws, such as the RICO act, as well as certain California business and professional codes.

As I requested in my last post, please get me in touch with someone who can help.
