sales in quickbooks desktop

After entering my sales tax liablity in quickbooks. I realize that I forgot to enter the discount for that transaction.

Please help! What are my options? Do I delete that payment and start over or can I go back and correct that transaction? It would not let me go back and made the changes

Thanks in advance

Hi there, barbgreenx.

Yes, you can delete the sales tax payment and re-enter them so that you can include the discount.

Let me show you how to delete it:

  1. Go to the List menu.
  2. Select Chart of Accounts.
  3. Choose the bank account.
  4. Find the check for sales tax payment.
  5. Click on it and select Delete.

Once you delete the payment, it will now show up on the sales tax window. You can now start entering the sales tax payment with the discount.

Not to worry, @barbgreenx. I'm here to help you in making tax adjustments.

In QuickBooks Desktop, you can adjust your sales tax liability for the payment discount given by your sales tax agency.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Vendors menu and select Sales Tax then Adjust Sales Tax Due.
  2. In the Sales Tax Adjustment window:
  3. Enter the adjustment date, sales tax vendor, adjustment account, and other relevant information.
    1. Do not use sales tax payable for the adjustment account. Choose an Income account if you are making the adjustment because you received a discount/credit.
    2. In the Adjustment section, choose if you need to increase or reduce sales tax then enter the adjustment amount.
    3. In the Memo field, enter any additional notes.
    4. Select OK.

For more information, check out this article: Process sales tax adjustment.

Furthermore, you can get a detailed look at the taxes you owe and why you owe them by running the Sales Tax Liability report. This helps you make sure everything is accurate before you file your return to your tax agency.

Should you need any further assistance getting your sales tax liability straightened out, please don't hesitate to comment below. We're always here to help. Have a lovely day!
