We just imported our company file from Desktop to Online. After the import, all of my existing invoices no longer have a sales tax item chosen, so they show no sales tax. This makes my P&L wrong and of my customer accounts now show a credit balance because every invoice no longer has sales tax.
I've rebuilt my data and verified the company file to ensure we didn't have any errors. I only have one sales tax item, so the mapping shouldn't have been a problem. The sales tax rate did change several years ago, so newer invoices have a different rate than older ones.
The support reps I've spoken to seem to think the only way to fix it is to manually change the sales tax item for 10 years of invoices one at a time, which to a business owner, sounds a lot like a discouragement from switching to Quickbooks Online.
Anyone heard of this?
Can any users think of a way to change sales tax items for invoices in batches, or anything else I might change in my company file before importing from Desktop?
I should add, if 3rd party tools exist for importing only some transactions, I'd be perfectly willing to hire a Quickbooks Professional to export the last 3 years or so of data into a new, simpler company file in Desktop, then see if the automated conversion to Online works.

Thanks for posting here in the Community and for sharing what you've done to isolate this. Let me provide some updates about the issue you're getting when importing transactions from QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) to QuickBooks Online (QBO).
This has been reported as an ongoing issue with an investigation number 23385 and our Product Developers are diligently working to get it fixed as soon as possible. While we don't have a specific timeframe as to when the issue will be resolved, you can manually add the sales tax on the invoices as a workaround.
To do this, you may pull up and customize the Transaction List by Date report to show the invoice with the missing sales tax. Here's how:
1. Log into your QBO account, then go to Reports menu at the left panel.
2. Enter Transaction List by Date on the search bar.
3. Click Customize, then select the correct date range.
4. Choose Change columns under Rows/Clolumns, then put a check mark on Tax Amount.
5. Select Run report.
I'd also suggest you contact our Phone Support Team again. I know you already called, but I want to make sure that you'll be added to our notification list. I have been on the phone with support for over 60 days. They repeatedly tell me this is a feature and will not be fixed nor will they contact me.

Once the fix is implemented, will we have to re-import thereby making online unusable until the fix is here?

Our engineers will be the one to cascade the things that you’ll need to do after the issue is fix. This includes if you need to reimport the transactions or just refresh the program.

If we have to re-import I will lose all work done in QBO, correct? then how would that work? After 60 days you cannot import again, how would that work?
Our engineers are taking all possible scenarios in consideration when fixing the issue including what you’ve mentioned. Also, past 60 days transactions can still be imported in QuickBooks Online manually. You’ll just need to secure a backup copy of your QuickBooks Company file.

today is the last day of my 4th company created waiting for this fix over the last 6 months.
I have paid the full amount since last year waiting for this fix.

Wow! I have to say I'm just blown away with this response from QBO! We are trying to convert as well and all of our taxable invoices have come over missing the Tax Rate. So a customer invoice says taxable yet there is no Sales Tax Rate applied. This leaves us with a credit balance for the customer in the amount of the sales tax. Is this the same issue everyone is having?? Holy cow, how long has QBO been out?? Please add us to the updated list. Until then we will have to steer clear of converting
