VAT in UAE and system compatibility

Hello there, Mushhood.

Thanks for sharing your concern in the QBCommunity forum. I've seen a few posts about the new UAE VAT law and I'd like to share an update about this.

The VAT feature is available in all QuickBooks Online versions. Our developers have added three main features into QuickBooks Online to be compliant with the new tax law for UAE. These are the new set of VAT codes, an option to enter transactions by location, and a form for the VAT return.

If you haven't set up VAT yet, here's what you need to do:

  1. Click Taxes in the left panel.
  2. Click the Turn On VAT option.

The good thing about this update is all the required rates and agencies will be set up automatically for you. All you need to do is choose the VAT code below the Tax column when creating transactions.

For more information and visual guide on how to set up the UAE VAT, please see this article: VAT Feature Update FAQ (UAE only).

There you have it! If you have any additional questions, just let me know. Thanks for dropping by.

If you have been using the US version, then no, it will never be VAT compatible.

I have heard from some I know that the UK version will work for the new VAT requirements.  If you were using the US version there is no way to transfer the file, starting with the UK version means you will have to start a new file from scratch

If the version you are using has sales tax only, and if the address blocks have a US zip code as part of the address, that is a US version.

Hello intlaccounting,

Thank you for reaching out to the Community. I'm here to lend a hand with the error message you encounter when setting up VAT in QuickBooks Online.

I've checked the list of investigations and haven't found any reports from other users concerning the error message when setting up VAT. You can perform some basic troubleshooting to see if the problem is related to your browser.

Please start with accessing your account through a private browser. You can follow the shortcut keys below depending on what you're using:

  • Google Chrome: press CTRL + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: press CTRL + Shift + P
  • Internet Explorer: press CTRL + Shift + P
  • Safari: press Command + Shift + N

If it works, you can switch back to your regular browser and clear its cache. You can also try switching to a different browser to see if this fix the problem.

If all fails after following the steps provided above, I recommend reaching out to our Support Specialists this time. They have the ability to pull-up accounts and update the setup on your behalf.

Here's how you can reach them:

  1. Click the question (?) mark or the Help option in the upper-right corner.
  2. Click Contact us.
  3. Choose you QuickBooks product.

Please know I'm always available here to help you with your VAT setup. The Community is always ready to help.

Great news, Al Ain Star Auto Garage.

As what my colleague @SophiaAnnL mentioned, we have added new features in compliant to the new tax law in UAE. These are the following:

  • New set of VAT codes.
  • Options to record transactions by location.
  • New VAT return form.

If you haven't set up yet, here's how to do it:

  1. Click Taxes.
  2. Click Turn on VAT.

You can read more of the details in this article: VAT Feature Update.

If there's anything else you need. Don't hesitate to swing by anytime.

I am using quick books online but my question is how to differentiate recoverable and irrecoverable input tax in Quickbooks, because at the time of putting purchases we have to mention the tax rate, but some of those purchases are not allowed by FTA to reclaim back the VAT. For example we can not claim back input vat on entertainment services, whereas all the hotels and restaurant bills charge 5% vat. So in order to make a correct vat return in quickbooks we have to take out vat which is not recoverable. Help in this matter.

Hi there, Nukhba.

We're currently unable to identify which is not reclaimable when the option is enabled for the purchases.

As a workaround, you'll want to file the form outside of QuickBooks. Then, manually calculate the reclaimable and the not reclaimable amounts.

To get the details, you can run a VAT Detail Report by following the steps:

  1. On the left panel, click Reports.
  2. Type VAT Detail in the search box.
  3. Select the Report period, and click the Run report button.

I'll be sure to forward your request to our Product engineers for assessment.

For any additional questions about VAT in QuickBooks, please let us know and we'll get back to you. Thanks.

Hi Sophia

Im afraid Quickbooks is NOT fully compliant with UAE VAT regulations, and as a result we are having major billing challenges with our biggest client, a UAE telco

We are having to use MS Excel to create duplicate invoices, because the UAE Federal Tax Authority (Article 59) states that on EVERY LINE OF THE INVOICE should state:

(1) the rate of Tax (5%), and

(2) the Amount of Tax due for that line item

I have tried every variation of the standard Quickbooks invoice format, but the system does neither of these things at the moment

Hello, @Corranet.

I've checked that you've posted twice in which this is the duplicate post: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/reports-and-accounting/uae-fta-art-59-states-that-.... You can check out the solution I've provided.
