Using the mileage deduction in automatic mileage tracking

How much can you deduct for mileage?

We use the IRS standard mileage rate to calculate your deductions. The 2017 rate was 53.5 cents per business mile driven, and the 2018 rate is 54.5 cents per mile.

What kinds of trips qualify as business?

If you own or lease your car, you can deduct miles driven for work-related purposes. A few examples:

  • Driving for a rideshare company (check with your specific company for details)
  • Going between offices or work locations
  • Picking up supplies
  • Dropping off orders
  • Coffee with a client

Remember, commuting (between home and a permanent work location) does not qualify as a business trip.
