Release notes for QuickBooks Desktop 2018

Learn what’s new and improved in the latest updates to QuickBooks Desktop 2018 and Enterprise 18.0.

We update QuickBooks regularly to give you a better experience and fix issues. These release notes explain what's new.

Note that each new update includes all the changes from earlier updates.

If you have automatic updates turned on, QuickBooks will download updates for you. But you can check for updates manually at any time.

Release 13 (R13) - October 2019

What's important about Release 13?

  • Access to QB Capital
  • Access to Payments services for payroll customers
QB Capital: QBDT
  • Payments customers now have access to QB Capital as a business funding option
  • QuickBooks Desktop payroll users now have easy access to activating payments services
Find File
  • Easily find and open your company files with the addition of a file search option on the No company open screen.
Other updates
  • Applying discounts no longer causes a Cash Basis Balance Sheet out of balance issue
  • Users can now activate manual payroll from the Preferences menu
  • Updated to comply with new Gmail requirements
Bug Fixes
  • Company file not longer is changed if Accountant directly copies the .qbw file instead of using the QuickBooks menu option
  • Installer no longer crashes when not connected to the internet

What's important about Release 12?

  • Updates to payroll compliance
Payroll Compliance
  • Indiana (except Assisted). You’re now able to set up your employees' State Occupational Code (SOC) as seasonal and file State Unemployment Income (SUI) quarterly using the XLT tool.
  • Maine. You can now set up your employees' SOC as seasonal.
  • Washington. You can now identify and correct Paid Family Medical Leave (PMFL) discrepancies before quarterly filing.
Bug Fixes
  • Fixed the issue where the invoice history appears as blank if you use the credit memo to pay the invoice.
  • Fixed the issue where the Payments sign in icon flickers when sending an invoice.
  • Fixed the issue where the Account Center page only shows an error when a user without Realm signs in.
  • Fixed the issue where the Past Due stamp doesn’t show up in the invoice page bubble when the What’s new feature is on.
  • Fixed the issue that was causing Balance Sheet to go out of Balance when using an expense account in a credit memo line item.

Here’s what’s new in this update.

  • Change in QuickBooks File Manager password reset
QuickBooks File Manager Password Reset
  • Resetting the password now requires using your license information instead of answering challenge questions.
Database Server Manager
  • You will be notified about permission changes when you add or remove folders by scanning it with the QuickBooks Database Server Manager.
Opening Company File
  • You can now open converted QuickBooks Mac 2016 files without QuickBooks crashing.
Bug Fixes
  • Fixed the issue causing QuickBooks to crash when opening internet-enabled company files.
  • Fixed the issue where the Inventory Valuation Summary report using the All inventory Sites filter shows twice the total quantity on-hand.
  • Now able to see the scroll bar in the Email Change Request screen.
  • Fixed the issue causing the old check number to appear in the subject line and body of the Payment Receipt email in Outlook.
  • Improved the experience for accountants trying to unlock the Accountant's toolbox on clients machines.

What's important about Release 10?

  • Payroll Compliance and onboarding
Accountant's Copy File Transfer
  • We've made improvements to the ACFT experience for better collaboration with accountants.
Payroll Onboarding
  • We've incorporated a simpler and faster in-product Payroll purchase experience. After purchase, you can easily onboard to QuickBooks Desktop Payroll. With the ‘Express Setup’ option, you can quickly add your employees, set up their pay and benefits and run your first payroll.
Payroll reports
  • You can now generate State Mandated Retirement reports for states that require reporting of retirements deductions from each employee’s paycheck.

What's important about Release 9?

  • E-invoicing
  • Payroll Onboarding
  • TSheets integration
  • E-invoicing workflow that shows a reminder to send e-invoices after every 7th invoice created.
  • Revamped Purchase flow
    • Simpler and faster way to sign up for and purchase Payroll subscription.
  • New Payroll Setup Wizard
    • Adding employees, setting up payroll, and getting to the first payroll is up to 40% faster for new QuickBooks Desktop Payroll customers.
TSheets deep integration
  • All QuickBooks Desktop users can now integrate their TSheets account directly from within QuickBooks with an updated integration method.
  • You can set up a TSheets account directly within QuickBooks before integrating.

What's important about Release 8?

  • Improved upgrade functionality
  • Improved help system
Upgrade to a new version
  • You can now upgrade your software to a new version from within your product (for example from 2018-2019) with no additional downloads required.
Bank Feeds
  • Improved messaging and fixes for common errors in bank feeds
  • Remodel of the help system for a better experience, easier discovery and provide a clear path to Intuit support.
Accounts Receivable
  • Fixed issue that caused the Invoice form to freeze for Users with Microsoft Outlook installed.
  • Added a troubleshoot button to fix errors that occur when saving forms as PDF or printing them.

What's important about Release 7?

  • Pay stub error resolved
  • Fixed an issue causing employees to receive and open another employee's pay stub using their own password.
  • To protect sensitive data, a prompt to authorize users will appear before changing any Employee & Vendor Direct Deposit Bank details.
  • The queue of blocked paychecks caused by past edits will now be cleared out to be able to send new paychecks.
  • For improved security, each Payments user will be required to have their own unique Intuit ID to help admins in enabling and revoking access.
  • Fixed an error causing QuickBooks to crash when creating a company file.

What's important about Release 6?

  • Change in connecting to Capital One bank feeds
  • Pay stub error resolved
Bank Feeds
  • If you use Capital One for your bank feeds, you will have to perform a one-time set up for continued usage. This is required so that you can use the upgraded technology mandated by Capital One.
  • Fixed an issue where employees may receive another employee's pay stub by error and were able to open with their password
  • All first time users who have never sent an e-invoice to their customers, will see a reminder to send e-invoices after every 7th invoice emailed.
  • Additional improvements were made to further reduce 80029c4a errors.

Bank Feeds
  • Fixed error 194 by ensuring routing numbers are always comprised of 9 digits
Inventory (Enterprise only)
  • This release will allow users to receive inventory with the mobile app/scanner. Now inventory items received against purchase orders can be scanned and the company file is updated automatically, avoiding manual entry. The release will also provide a Dashboard to view and manage all open purchase orders, and adds support for 2 additional Bluetooth scanners that can be used with an Android device running the mobile app.
  • When a Sales Order is updated by one user (in the Multi-user mode) another user attempting to update the same Sales Order will now see an appropriate message indicating an inability to do so.
  • The Sales Order Fulfillment worksheet will remain open if a transaction is being edited by another user, so first users' changes are not lost.
  • When a user navigates to another window, the sort order for the picklist tab is maintained.
  • When a user changes the Site on both the Sales Order Fulfillment worksheet and Item Details window and cancels out of the Item Details edit, the correct site is saved
  • Fixed an issue where a user was able to create picklists with an invalid picker name.
  • Fixed an issue where selecting few items on the Item List window and proceeding to the Pick List creation tab and again returning back to the Item List window was selecting all the items shown in the Item List window.
  • A message is now displayed when a user tries to update a Sales Order after an item in the original sales order was deleted.
  • Serial Number enablement is checked for a Sales Order, not just the overall serial number preference check.
  • Fixed an issue where some Help Articles were not opening
  • Fixed an issue that caused error 80029c4a to be displayed while opening QuickBooks after installing a release update
  • After signing up for Payments, all first-time payments users will be given a tour to guide them through e-invoice usage, receive payments and processing online payments.
  • Fixed an issue with exporting of Transaction Detail report when adding "Ship To" columns.

What's important about Release 4?

  • Payments
  • Update to latest 1099 Compliance changes from IRS for Tax Filing. Support for new functionality in the 1099-Misc forms printing wizard in the Vendor Center to enter State tax withheld and Payer's State ID with verification only for two states (WI and NJ). In an upcoming release, these form elements will also be written into the company file to retain for later use.
  • Fixed an issue causing Batch Invoices to be marked as sent but haven't been sent
  • Fixed a crash while exporting a report to an existing excel sheet which is in use
  • Fixed help crash issue when a user is in offline mode.
  • Fixed an issue while saving an invoice after copy-pasting any billable items.
Online Banking
  • Capital One bank will discontinue support for the Direct Connect service by 31st December 2017. Express Web Connect service will replace Direct Connect and the impact will extend to loss of Bill Pay functionality in addition to statement download. Instructions to switch from Direct Connect to Express Web Connect is available on this KB article: Direct Connect online banking for Capital One will be discontinued.
  • Merchants can now accept and process EMV chip credit cards with QuickBooks 2018 (R4 onwards)
  • Fixed an issue with QuickBooks crashing when a user upgrades Company file, processes a credit card and E-Check transactions then closes Company File
  • Fixed an issue with Build Description not matching the UI.
User Interface
  • Corrected the KB article link displayed on Balance Sheet Out of Balance warning dialog.

What's important about Release 3?

  • Unrecoverable Errors
  • Multi Monitor
  • Fixed an issue that was causing the title bar of the New/Edit Item window to disappear behind the viewable area.
Inventory (Enterprise Only)
  • Fixed an issue that prevented a user from sorting the Class column in the Auto Create PO window with multiple items.
Multi Monitor
  • Fixed UI issues that were causing inconsistencies in Multi Monitor screens.
QuickBooks File Manager (Accountant Only)
  • QuickBooks File Manager (QFM) is now available in QuickBooks 2018
  • Employee Pay Adjustments History report tracks changes to employee pay rates (only hourly, salary, bonus, and commission items) over a period of time. Rates shown on this report are based on existing paycheck data. To view the report, go to Reports > Employees & Payroll > Employee Pay Adjustments History.   • Fixed issues in Checks, Items, Invoices, and Customer Center that were causing Unrecoverable Errors in QuickBooks.
  • Fixed an issue that was causing the same list of errors being shown in Can be and Can't be fixed section after running Verify and Rebuild.
