Troubleshoot and fix banking errors

Nobody likes to get a bank error. The good news is, we've got ways to help you fix it.

If you’re experiencing a specific error message, follow the specific instructions below:

Alternatively, if your downloads seem stuck, or your latest bank transactions aren’t available, there are three steps you can take to get your transactions downloading again:

Step 1: Start a manual download

  1. Go to Bookkeeping, select Transactions, then select Bank transactions (Take me there).
  2. Select Update.

This updates all your connected bank and credit card accounts. The number of transactions in each account tile will increase if QuickBooks downloads new transactions.

If your downloads remain slow or stuck, there may be an issue on your banks end. Move on to step 2.

Step 2: Check your bank or credit card's website

First, make sure you check the URL QuickBooks uses to connect your bank:

  1. Go to Bookkeeping, select Transactions, then select Bank transactions (Take me there).
  2. Select Link account. Note: You won’t add an account, you just need the listed URL.
  3. Search for your bank and select it.
  4. Copy the URL listed for your bank.
  5. Sign in to your bank or credit card's website using the copied URL.

If you can sign in, it's a good sign that there isn't a major issue. Next, check the following:

  1. Check your account for messages, notifications, or alerts.
  2. Look for any display issues as you navigate the website. These can block QuickBooks from downloading new transactions.
  3. Check your bank’s website for any announcements about new security requirements.

If everything looks good, go back to QuickBooks and follow step one.

Step 3: Update your bank info in QuickBooks

Did you recently update anything on your bank’s website, like your account number, username, or password? If so, update that info in QuickBooks as well:

  1. Go to Bookkeeping, select Transactions, then select Bank transactions (Take me there).
  2. Select the tile for the bank account. Then select the Edit ✎ icon.
  3. Select Edit sign-in info.
  4. Update your info as needed.

Fix specific bank errors

Bank errors often block QuickBooks from downloading new transactions. Follow the steps below based on the error code you are experiencing.

Bank error 101 is a general error code, but we’re here to help you fix it! Follow the steps below:

  1. Try a new tab or a different browser

In a new tab or a different browser, sign in to your bank's website to see if you can get in without any errors.

  1. Check if your account is active

Your account is considered active if there’s an existing balance, or if there were transactions in the past 12 months. If you’re supposed to have an active account but are still unable to log in to your bank’s website, contact your bank directly.

  1. Look for missed prompts 

Go back to your bank’s website and look for messages that need your confirmation (e.g. terms and conditions). Acknowledge the prompt, then go back and refresh your account in QuickBooks Online.

If you are seeing bank error 102 or 105, it usually means there may be a problem on your bank's end. Their website may be undergoing maintenance or have server issues which can stop the online bank connection to QuickBooks.

 Follow the steps below:

  1. Manually update your bank connection
  1. Sign in to QuickBooks Online.
  2. Go to Bookkeeping and select Transactions.
  3. Go to Bank transactions (Take me there) and select Update.

If you still see an error, move on to step two.

  1. Check your bank or credit card’s website 

Go to your bank or credit cards website and try to sign in. If you can't sign in, reach out to your bank or credit card company about the next steps.

If you have signed in OK, move on to step three.

  1. Look for any messages, notifications or broken pages

Your bank may have sent you an alert to tell you that something isn’t working.

Try loading different account pages such as your account history. If you can’t open  these, there may be connection issues.   

Is your account new? If your bank or credit card account is new, it may not be available to connect to online banking right away. Reach out to your bank or credit card company if you keep seeing error 102 or 105.

If after 48 hours, everything looks good, follow step one to manually update your bank connection and refresh your account details. 

Error 103 means the user ID or password is incorrect for the bank account you’re trying to connect to. Here’s how to fix this error for both existing and new connections.

  1. Double-check your sign-in info is correct 

In a new tab or a different browser, sign in to your bank's website Note: If you have separate accounts with the bank (such as a business account and a personal account.)

Signed in successfully? Great news you know the user ID and password are correct. Move on to step 2!

Sign-in error? Follow the prompts from your bank to access your user ID, reset your password or both. Then move on to step 2.

  1. Enter your bank sign-in info 

For an existing connection:

  1. Go to Bookkeeping, select Transactions, then select Bank transactions (Take me there).
  2. Select the bank or credit card account you need to update.
  3. Select Edit ✎.
  4. Select Edit sign in info Tip: clear any web browser user ID and password auto-fills to ensure no incorrect information is entered.
  5. Manually enter the user ID and password for your bank account 
  6. Select Save and connect

For a new connection:

For any new connections, when connecting your bank and credit card accounts make sure to choose the correct ‌type of account you want to connect. For example, if you’re trying to connect your business account, select the option labelled “Business” if there is one.

Error 106 means QuickBooks is unable to locate your account on your bank or financial institution's website. This usually happens when the account is closed.If you have recently closed your bank or financial institution, you’ll need to disconnect your account. Learn more about how to delete and disconnect accounts. 

Error 108 means there's a message from your bank or credit card on their website. Messages, especially ones about updates, can block the connection to QuickBooks. Types of messages can include: New terms of service, required action, or new 

Follow the steps below: 

  1. Check your bank or credit card’s website for messages

In a new tab or a different browser, sign in to your bank's website and check for any updates, messages or notifications. If you need to take any action, the message should give you specific steps. 

Once you have reviewed, and addressed any messages, sign back into your QuickBooks Online.

  1. Manually update your bank connection 
  1. Sign in to QuickBooks Online.
  2. Go to Bookkeeping and select Transactions.
  3. Go to Bank transactions (Take me there) and select Update.

If you are still seeing error 108, move onto step 3. 

3. Contact your bank 

If you didn't see notifications on your bank's website, or you have made changes and still see the error, reach out to your bank. 

Error 109 means your bank needs you to update your online banking password as it may have expired, or needs updating. 

Follow the steps below: 

  1. Update your password on your banks website

Sign in to your banks website and follow the steps required to update your password.

  1. Update your banking credentials in QuickBooks Online 
  1. Sign in to QuickBooks Online 
  2. Go to Bookkeeping, select Transactions, then select Bank transactions (Take me there).
  3. Select the blue bank square for the account you want to update.
  4. Select the Edit ✎ icon in the tile for the bank account you want to update. Then select Edit sign-in info.
  5. Update your password.

When you're done, select Save and connect.

Error 155 means that your financial institution isn't allowing QuickBooks to automatically retrieve your data. But don’t worry, we are working with your bank to get this resolved. In the meantime, you can use the transaction upload feature to manually import your bank transactions.

Error 185 means your financial institution has additional security requirements that you need to address, such as a security question or one-time passcode.

Follow the steps below based on your banks requirment

  1. Security question

If your bank or financial institution asks you a security question, enter your answer. If you have multiple security questions, it's possible you may see this error again. As you enter your answer, QuickBooks Online will remember the security questions you have been asked and will answer for you.

If you don't see the security question pop up, you might need to try another browser or you may need to disable your browser's pop-up blocker.

Note: If you’ve forgotten your original answers, your bank should provide advice on next steps to help you reset them.

  1. One-time password

If your bank or financial institution asks for an one-time password, get your one-time password (on a device, through text, call, etc.), and enter it each time you see Error 185.

Error 187 means your financial institution’s additional security requirements, such as security questions or one-time passcodes, weren't entered correctly. To fix this error, go to your bank’s website and follow the on-screen steps to enter the correct information.

Note: If you’ve forgotten your original answers, your bank should provide advice on next steps to help you reset them.

Error 192 means your bank requires additional sign info, which prevents QuickBooks Online from automatically downloading banking transactions. In some cases, this can be in the form of an ever-changing one-time password that is required to access the account. 

As QuickBooks is unable to download your transactions, you can manually upload your bank transactions using CSV files.

Error 323 means you’ve connected two accounts with similar names or account numbers, or you’ve added the same account twice.

In this instance you can: 

  1. Rename the similar account 

Sign in to your bank or credit card’s website and rename one of the accounts so each one is unique. Reach out to you bank for any help or support in doing this. 

Once the account has been re-named, sign back into QuickBooks and connect the account again.

  1. Disconnect the duplicate account

If you have added the same account twice, disconnect one of them to help fix the issue. 

Error 324 means we can't find the account you set up when it tries to connect to your bank or credit card's website. This may be because:

  • Your bank or credit card company changed the account or moved it to a new server.
  • You changed the account name or other info on your bank or credit card company's website.
  • Your bank or credit card company issued a new account or credit card.
  • You closed your bank or credit card account.

To fix this, you'll need to update and check your connection in QuickBooks. To do this:

  1. Sign in to QuickBooks Online.
  2. Go to Bookkeeping, select Transactions, then select Bank transactions (Take me there).
  3. Select Update.
  4. If you still see the error, look for a banner on the Banking page. Select Check connections link and follow the steps to fix the issue.

If you want to keep your old account in QuickBooks:

  1. Follow the steps to disconnect the account.
  2. Follow the steps to connect or link the new account to your chart of accounts.

If you want to start a new account in QuickBooks:

  1. Follow the steps to create a new account in QuickBooks Online.
  2. Follow the steps to connect the new account to your chart of accounts.
  3. Follow the steps to disconnect the old account.
  4. Follow the steps to merge the old and the new accounts.

Bank error 377 means QuickBooks can’t download your bank transactions. To fix this, follow the steps below to update your online bank connection:

  1. Go to Bookkeeping, select Transactions, then select Bank transactions (Take me there).
  2. Select the Update Now link from the Let's fix this bank connection banner.
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts to update the connection.
