Cannot see opening balance

Hi,

when I run a transaction Report on some entries in the Balance sheet I can see that there is a Beginning balance, I am unable to click on this Beginning balance to view it. If I go to the chart of accounts and click Account History I get a history of the account but it does not show the Beginning Balance. How do I view the beginning balance?

Best regards,

Noel

Cannot see opening balance

Thanks for sharing your concern with us, TUSSU. It will help us identify your issue in QuickBooks Online. Let's work together, and I'll ensure you'll see your opening balance.

The beginning balance in the Balance Sheet report represents the amount in the account at the start of the specific reporting period you are viewing. This is essentially a checkpoint that allows you to verify that your records are accurate from the beginning of the period. It’s calculated by summing up all the transactions up to the start of that period.

We're unable to click this amount in the report and it won't directly show up in the register because it is not a single transaction but an aggregated total of all previous transactions up to that point. It is there to give you a reference to ensure that the transactions within the period are being recorded against the correct starting point.

On the other hand, the opening balance refers to the initial entry that establishes the starting amount in an account when you first set it up in QuickBooks Online. When you open the bank register, you'll see the opening balance entry. This is the beginning point for that account and doesn't change unless you manually adjust it.

Here's how to view it:

  1. Go to the Gear icon.
  2. Choose the Chart of Accounts.
  3. Locate the account and click the View Register.
  4. Click the Funnel icon and enter "Opening Balance Equity" in the Find field.
  5. Hit Apply.
