Entering a small loan into QB Online

I am unable to follow the steps in this QuickbooksHelp post: "Set up a loan in QuickBooks Online" on how to book a small loan.

That's because my QB Online Pro does not have the option to do any of these items:

3. From the Account Type ▼ dropdown, select Non-current Liabilities. Note: If you plan to pay off the loan by the end of the current financial year, select Current Liabilities instead.

4. From the Detail Type ▼ dropdown, select Notes Payable (or Loan Payable).

5. Give the account a relevant name, like "Loan for a car" or "Covid-19 relief loan."

6. Choose when you want to start tracking your finances. In the Balance field, enter the amount in the account, and determine the as of date. Enter today's date if you want to start tracking immediately.

7. Select Save and close.

I am not given the 'Account Type' option. All I see is a blank 'Category Name *' field followed by one 'Create category under *' and a link to 'Select category' where I am not shown any options mentioned above.

Any help appreciated.

Entering a small loan into QB Online

Hello enjoypb, it's nice to hear from you.

The option should be visible on your end since you're using QuickBooks Online. Please note that steps provided in the Set up a loan in QuickBooks Online article is only applicable in QBO.

First, make sure to click the New button to see the Account Type field and other options. Please take a look at the sample screenshot below.

If you're new to QuickBooks or using QBO new interface, you can select Liabilities in the New account window. Then, select and enter all the details needed.

If the same thing happens, it's likely a result of a browser issue. What we can do now is use an incognito window. this helps us better isolate the issue. Using an incognito window  prevents your browser from storing additional cache files that maybe not letting you see the other option.

  • If you're using Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Edge, press the CTRL + Shift + P shortcut on your keyboard.
  • For Safari, hit Command + Shift + N
  • Press CTRL + Shift + N if you're using Google Chrome.

If it works fine, delete cache and temporary internet files. You can clear cache and temporary internet files to optimize the browser's performance. It will also help delete the information stored in the cache. Another way is to use compatible browsers with QuickBooks Online

To learn more about account and detail types, you can check this article: Find out how to use account types and detail types in your chart of accounts.

If you want to create subaccounts, here's the step by step process on how to add them: Create subaccounts in your chart of accounts in QuickBooks Online. It includes the details on how to change an existing account into a subaccount.

Keep me posted on how this goes by leaving a message in this thread. I'd be glad to help you out. Stay safe and have a good one, enjoypb.
