Converting Customer to Customer Project
Hello,
I hope you can help with the following:
Current Situation:
Customer A in Accounting has invoice that was converted from estimate (no payment yet)
Customer B has estimates / invoices and payments
Objective:
For Customer A and Customer B to become Projects (names changed) under Customer A's Name
What I have completed and tried:
Created 2 projects under Customer A's name
Attempted to change name on invoice in Customer A to Project under the account but it then deletes everything off the invoice - therefore I do not save.
What are the steps to simply move the transactions to projects?
Thanks in advance!

Let's get this resolved, @AlexisR. I've got the steps to help you achieve your goal of converting a customer to a customer's project in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
You can accomplish this by temporarily creating a new dummy customer, making Customer A and Customer B sub-customers and then converting them into a project. First, create a dummy customer with a different name than Customer A.
Once you have a dummy customer, let's have it as your parent customer that you will rename to Customer A later on. Follow the steps below to proceed making Customer A and Customer B sub-customers:
- Go to Sales, then select Customers.
- Pick Customer A and Customer B and click Edit.
- Select the Is a sub-customer checkbox.
- Choose the dummy customer as a parent account. This is the account that's connected to the project.
- Tap the Bill parent customer checkbox.
After that, you can now convert sub-customers to a project. Let me show you how:
- Go to Sales, then select Customers.
- Click the New project ▼ dropdown and then Convert from sub-customer.
- Pick Convert to complete the process.
Finally, you can edit the projects' names and the customer name accordingly.

Thank you.
Before I complete the task can you verify what this means:
"This wipes the slate clean and your sub-customer's existing transactions won't transfer over."
Does this mean that the invoices, estimates, payments will not move with the sub-account to project?
We would like all transactions to move from sub-customer to project.

Thanks for getting back into this thread, @AlexisR. I'll clarify things for you so you can proceed with converting your customers to a project in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
Beforehand, please know that I've updated my response above to avoid confusion with the process.
Regarding your concern, all of your transactions related to the sub-customer will also be moved to the projects once converted. Just make sure to select the correct status during the procedure.
Here are some sample screenshots of how the transactions appear on the projects and customer's transaction list:
Additionally, once you set up your projects, you can track income, expenses, timesheets, and labor costs. You can check out this article to learn more about this option: Track hourly labor costs and profitability by project in QuickBooks Online.
I'd love to get updates on how this goes. You're always welcome to add a comment below if you have further questions about handling projects in QBO. Have a great day!
