Request to be the master admin or primary contact

Learn how to become the master admin or primary contact for a QuickBooks account.

Is the current master admin or primary contact still available? If so, they can transfer the role to you within minutes. If they’re no longer around or can't make the change, it’s okay. You can send a request to our account protection team. Here's what to do.

Step 1: Gather documents for your request

For security, we ask you for documents to verify that you have rightful ownership or access privileges for the account.

Find out what documents you need by reviewing both questions below. If the documents you have are physical copies, take high-quality photos or scans so you can upload them.

Are you the owner of the business?

What type of business is it?

  • Please make sure your business documents show who the owner, chairperson, or leader of the business operation is.
  • If the master admin has passed away, we may ask you to provide a power of attorney document or other court documents that confirm the transfer of ownership.

If you can't provide the required documents

If you can't provide all the documents we need to verify your ownership or access privileges, we’ll be unable to carry out your request without a court order. If possible, try again and see if the current master admin or primary contact can transfer the role to you.

Step 2: Send your request

  1. Sign in to QuickBooks Online. If you don't have an Intuit account yet, first create an account. Then return here and refresh this page in your web browser.
  2. Fill out the form at the bottom of this page with your information, and upload the documents you gathered.
  3. Shortly after you submit your request, you’ll receive a confirmation email from our support team with your case number.

We’ll let you know that we transferred the master admin or primary contact role to you. You're all set.

If we’re unable to approve your request

We’ll let you know why and what steps you can take. For example, we’ll let you know if a specific document is missing, illegible, or doesn't meet the criteria for approval. You’ll need to send a new request and upload all of the required documents again for your security.
