Well, depends on which quickbooks you are asking about. You mention a mac OS but tagged your post for Windows version. So, second part first, yes, if you can start Boot Camp and buy and install Windows then you most certainly should be able to run QB for PC on your mac.

 

This may mean 2016 only runs on Sierra through Yosemite and not Mojave. But consider, you only have 7 months of support left for 2016 for Mac, about time for an upgrade to 2019 anyway https://help.quickbooks.intuit.com/en_US/kb/quickbooks-desktop-system-requirements/000005466_en_US:S...

Let me share some information about QuickBooks Mac system requirements.

 

The recently released macOS Mojave should be compatible with your QuickBooks Mac 2016 version. You'll only need to make sure you're able to download the latest R29 release patch.

 

Our Support Team has released this update to fix software crashes and enhance the stability of your QuickBooks edition. Here's how you can install the update:

 

  1. Go to the QuickBooks Desktop menu.
  2. Choose Check for QuickBooks Updates.
  3. If a newer version is available, click on Install Update.
  4. When prompted, click Install and Relaunch.
  5. Once the update is complete, your QuickBooks Desktop for Mac will automatically open.

After I updated to Mojave, my toolbar icons text turned black. I used to be white. I tried Mojave in light mode and dark mode and still the text is black (and quite unreadable).  Any ideas?  Everything else "seems" to be working and QB 2016 is updated.  Thanks!

Herb8165:  There seem to be a lot of issues that people are writing about with Mojave in QB 2016 on the Mac. Several responses simply say that they are "working on it."  Most report issues with crashes.  I upgraded to Mojave and all looks good except the text is now black on the toolbar and therefor it's difficult to read. My invoices, checks, lists etc all seem to work fine.  I upgraded from High Sierra. That may be one of the issues if people have not been keeping up with the current OS upgrades.  Sorry I can't be more help.

rswc90, Try running QuickBooks->Check for Updates and apply the latest update. R30 was released yesterday and I'm hoping that will fix the issue.

The Dark Mode feature comes with the recent update release for QuickBooks Desktop Mac. You may also want to visit this article for more information about the recent changes and improvements in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2016.

 

I'd suggest getting in touch with our phone specialists they'll be to help you set this into Light Mode. To do that, please follow these steps:

  2. Choose QuickBooks Mac Desktop.

  4. On the right side, click the Green Phone button to see the support number.

All of a sudden ... TODAY ... my tool bar words show in white rather than black. Did YOU fix it or did I?!  Ha! There have been so many machinations with "billy-rigging" all my software since the Mojave upgrade, I wonder was it you or me!?  If it was you, Thank you!

Just as what my colleague @Jen_D mentioned above; we continuously roll out updates which can help fix QuickBooks software crashes and enhance the stability of the program. But of course, we wouldn't be able to resolve this without your help and patience.

Thanks for reaching out to us here in the Community. I'm here to share some information about the compatibility of QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) for Mac 2014 to Mojave.

 

Just so you're aware, QBDT for Mac 2014 was discontinued last May of 2017, and is not compatible with Mojave. To regain your access to your QuickBooks company file, you can restore your previous Operating System (OS) or upgrade to QBDT for Mac 2019 version.

 

You can also download the 30-day trial version of the 2019 version through this link: http://www.qblittlesquare.com/. For further assistance, I'd highly suggest contacting our Phone Support team. Here's how you can reach them:

 

1. Go to: https://help.quickbooks.intuit.com/en_US/contact#.

2. Choose your QuickBooks product at the upper right.

3. Select a topic.

I have Quickbooks 2012 and have upgraded to El Capitan and now it wont work.  If I get Quickbooks 2016 will I be able to access my data from my 2012 version so I dont lose my last 8 years of information? I know it should be backed up!

It's important to make sure QuickBooks is up to date on the latest release to take advantage of updates and bug fixes. You may want to uninstall and reinstall your QuickBooks.

 

Here's how:

 

  1. Uninstall QuickBooks for Mac.
    1. Close QuickBooks.
    2. From the Finder menu (search bar) on the upper right corner of your screen, choose Go Applications.
    3. Click the QuickBooks icon and drag/move it to the Trash.
  2. Reinstall the latest version.
    1. Go to QuickBooks Product Updates.
    2. Click [Change] to select your QuickBooks Desktop version.
    3. Click the Download button to download the installer file to your computer.
    4. Double-click the downloaded .dmg file.
    5. Drag the QuickBooks Desktop icon to the Applications folder to install.

And yes, you'll still be able to access your eight years of data, We can create a backup copy or your company file and restore it your QuickBooks 2016. However, before installing and using QuickBooks Desktop for Mac, it is important to know the necessary system requirements. This will ensure that QuickBooks is compatible with your computer and will help avoid problems when you start using the program.

 

To create a backup of your company file, here's how:

 

  1. From the File menu, select Back Up. 
  2. On the following dialog window, select the folder where you want to store your backup file (.dmg). NOTE: It's a good idea to save backups somewhere other than your main local drive in case of a system failure. If you have a file hosting service (such as DropBox), flash drive or other removable media, you may want to select it here.
  3. When you have chosen, click Start Backup. The name of the backup will be your QuickBooks filename with the date and time the backup completed. You have the option to view the file in Finder.

After that, let's restore the company file:

 

  1. Double click the .dmg file. A new window opens the "Ghost" drive.
    Note: The "Ghost" drive displays the back up of your company file along with your attachments (if applicable).

  2. Drag the company file (with .qbXXXX extension) to the folder where you want to store the company file.
  3. Drag the Attached Documents Library folder (if applicable) to the same folder as the QuickBooks company file.
  4. Click the copy of the company file saved on the desired location or go to File > Open Company.

Once the company file is restored, QuickBooks will ask you to update the file. Just click the Update button.

Thank you so much for your help! The problem is, now that I have upgraded my mac to el Capitan, I can no longer open the quickbooks application at all. it just sends me to crash catcher without opening. so there is no way for me to create a backup.  I have the data on my computer, i guess, but i cannot get to it, as far as I can tell.

The QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2016 version currently supports the Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan. You usually encounter the Error Catcher message when unexpected issues are going on with the program.

 

To resolve and get back on track, you'll need the latest QuickBooks release of the program. Since you can no longer do this on your end, I recommend reinstalling the software from our website.

 

By doing so, it will include the latest patch and will no longer show any error messages on your end. For the detailed instructions, I recommend you visit the Install and set up QuickBooks Mac Desktop article.
